Overheating, Need Help!

I have a 2004 Bombardier Outlander that is over heating. The fan will not come on automatically, therefore causing the problem. I am wondering what tells the fan to come on (temp sender or temp switch). I have pulled the plug on the temperature sender on the radiator and can go from one side of the plug to the other and make the fan come on. One wire is hot and the other must run to the fan. However the temperature light on the dash is coming on when it gets hot also. It would seem that the temp sender told the light when to come on and the switch when to turn the fan on. If this is correct then the sender is fine and the switch is not turning the fan on. Let me know if I need to clarify anything.

I believe that the sensor is actually what grounds the loop for the fan to come on when it hits a certain voltage/temp. You know your fan is good so I would begin with replacing the sensor. I'm pretty sure they can be had for cheap. For what it's worth my DS has the same problem so I will be doing the same thing this evening or sometime this week.

add a switch to the fan so you turn it on manually i have one on my ds and it has never overheated and its a good beacuse if your fan sensor fails again you start your fan and make it back with out blowing a headgasket.

When my husbands fan wasn't working it was the fan. Got a new fan and the problem was solved. He tested the fan though and it didn't work.
Good luck fixing it. Engine Ice is a very good coolant to help keep it cool even when the fan isn't working. His never heated up after he put the engine ice in it even when the fan didn't work. It is not cheap but definately worth it.

ahaught: I've got the same problem with one of my 400 HO's. Did changing the sensor fix the problem ? i have been through my wiring and can't find a t-stat switch or relay so I'm thinking it must be the sensor, even though it does work to turn on the overheat indicator light. I would appreciate any info you come up with.

The switch in the head turns the light on when the motor gets too hot. The sender in the radiator turns the fan on when the antifreeze gets too hot.
