Default Oil change for 06 Outlander 400

Was just wondering if you folks use the expensive synthetic 4 stroke oil from the dealer or is there a cheaper just as good oil that you are comfortable using. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dealer tells me that the new Rotax motors are not meant to use synthetic oils. He said that if I use synthetic oil he will prolly have it back in the shop doing major engine work. They told me to use either Pensoil or Valvoline 10w30 or 10w40 depending on how you ride in weather above or below 32 degrees. I will find out more on this and let you know.

ss800, my Outy 800 came from the factory with synthetic oil. I changed it out before breakin, then went back to synthetic after breakin. On the 400 or the 800, the shop manual specifies SAE 4 stroke mineral based oil or 5W-40 synthetic oil, viscosity may vary with the weather.

Man I would walk way around that dealer when he doesn't even know something that basic about what he sells and services. Personally, I think he is intentionally jiving you.

Synthetic oils do not damage engines that I ever heard of. The opposite is true, the engines last longer.

The manual also specificies synthetic oil in the 2 differentials and in the gear box.

No offense, but I would not trust your dealer with my quad.

Nighttruck, you can become a preferred customer with Amsoil and get your synthetic oil reasonable. Also, you can go to auto parts store or Walmart and get the synthetic much less expensive than dealer.

I see the 400 takes 3 L for engine/transmission while the 800 takes 2 L for engine only, then the gearbox takes synthetic chaincase oil 70W-140, about one quart.
