One other question, actually the original, what all do I take off to get to the carb and what does it look like? I know this is pretty basic, but I am not a mechanic. I can however usually figure things out. I try to do everything myself.

 

First remove the seat, turn off the gas and remove the gas line,take the 3 screws on the r. side of the carb where the throttle cable goes. Remove the throttle cable, be careful here there is 1 small part that comes out that goes on the end of the cable. Next remove the clamps from both sides of the carb and pull off both sides of the intake tubes and the carb should be in hand. Just reverse the order when reinstalling the carb.

 

I live in Tulsa OK, 700 Ft above sea level. I just put a Dynojet kit on my ds650 2 weeks ago. Slip on exhaust and UNI filter, with slightly mod air box.. Here is what I did, per DYNOJET icalled them.... 190 jet, air mix screw was lightly seated and then backed aout 2 1/2 turns, and the need clip was on the 3rd groove. the needle cam in the jet kit... I noticed a big difference.. good luck... also you may want to take this time to replace the stock phillips head screws for allen head ones... a lot easier to deal with during the tuning process.
