Leaky Base Gasket... Need Recomendations
OK its a Z400 question, but any time I've ever posted on the Zuk forum the responses are less than I was looking for. So here it is.... My friend and I recently put a 470 big bore on his z400. He had some carb problems and kept popping the needle out of the seat, and it was run that way for probably 30 minutes on the ride back to camp after it popped on a ride. We retorqued the head bolts to 1.5 lbs over stock specs, but the leak is still there. Its is leaking outside and is getting a small amount of coolant into his oil. Now the question is, what should we do... he has a new set of gaskets on the way, but I'm not sure that will fix it. I have feeling since its the base gasket leaking either the case or the new jug may be the problem. Is there a sealant that we could use? I've heard of some magic sealants that could be used and since its the base there is no combustion pressure to deal with. Recomendations?????? I've also head of o-ringing the jug or case... should we consider that as an option?
Thanks for any responses.

but if you use a thicker base gasket wouldnt that lower the compression?....By changing the static compression height of the piston in the bore. I would try to run the correct seal and maybe coat it with yamabond or something....I dunno. I have to take my ds apart for the same reason this week....When i put mine back together the base gasket was about 2 weaks out and I couldnt wait so i made my own....I noticed this weekend riding that it is leaking oil and antifreeze out on both sides of the jug....So because i was impatient now i have to take it all back apart again...A lesson to everyone....Always wait on the right parts...even if you have to miss a trip to the dunes....Trust me there will be plenty more....

Make sure the top of the cases and the bottom of the cylinder is good and flat, then weld er' up. She should be good to go if you use argon on your welds.
