Default How much does a stock chain weigh?

I am getting ready to buy my parts to convert over to a 520 chain. I am looking at different chains and was curious what the stock chain weighs. I have found 520 x-rings weighting 3.5 to 3.7 pounds based on 100 links. Also how many links is the stock chain?

Right now I am looking at the EK SRX X-Ring Chain for $65...tensile strength is 8500 lbs. and the weight is 3.7 pounds for 100 links.

Gonna go with a steel front sprocket either from RWR or TheBom and for the rear I was leaning towards the Sidewinder Ti-moly, but Jeff Ross told me he has a real good aluminum that he has made and it should last me a season or longer.

So what do you guys think? Is there a lighter 520 x-ring chain out there? Should I go with the aluminum rear or the ti-moly?

Oh Chit!!! he we go!
I just put the Aluminum rear on with 520 kit LOVE it, Front Rear sproket and chain were about the cost of the Tri Moly Sproket which runs for 135 to 150 buck, the Tri moly I hear put it on and no worries and is dang near bullet proof, with the aluminum you need to keep your chain tight and you should get a season or 2, I went with the aluminum for 2 reasons, its lighter, and was more cost effective, but also with the 720 kit on I know I want to play with my gearing in the dunes I'm running a 42 now on the rear with a 15 up front, I want to get a 16 counter and see what happens and have a 40 tooth to play with, when I get the gearing to where I want it then ill get the Tri Moly then.

I still dont have much time on it, but after regearing it, man its fun to tear up the local dirt roads, cant wait to hit the sand and see what it dose. I have no complaints other than Im ready to put the TM48 on and hit the Dyno its a torque monster!!!

I didn't weigh the stock chain when I did my conversion but I can tell you its HEAVY! Much heavier than ANY 520 chain your looking at.

Stock 04+ chain has 104 links (yes I counted them). Earlier years probably have a couple of more links for the slightly longer swingarm.

I would also go with aluminum rear until you have your gearing figured out. It would suck to have to hang a $135 sprocket on the wall because its the wrong gear for your mods.

So, if I am staying with the stock swingarm and gearing, I can just order 104 links on the 520 chain, right?

The lightest chain I found was an RK 520 XSO at 3.39 pounds and a tensile strength of 7930 lbs. But for some reason EK does not list it for dirt, just street...I don't see how it could matter, a chain is a chain. It is a little more expensive at $80 or so.

Actually I just looked at DID and found the lightest X-Ring chain, a 520 VM with a tensile strength of 8,050 lbs and a weight 3.35 lbs!, but it is $119...yikes!

Does .4 pounds matter???

Lastly is the wear index an industry standard? The EK is just 1200, wheras the DID is 3220.

Is the 520 converstion really worth the $150(at least)?...I am in the midst of a pricy rebuild and if this isn't noticable I will save my money for something else...
Thanks
Seth
