pooched shock can it be repaired can I use pump air instead

The rear shock on my 2001 DS seems to be out of commision. When you press down on the bike the *** end just jump flops up and down.
It does hold the bike in a upward position but when you hit a bump it almost bounces you off from the constant mushy rebounding.
It doesnt seem to be leaking oil and I was wondering is it common to need to recharge these with nitrogen every 6 years or so.
I checked the reservior and theres no gas in it.
I have another used shock on order but I was wondering what would happen if I just went to the gas station and filled it with air from a tire pump?
Will it damage the unit if its just out of nitrogen?
Reason I ask is I took a bicycle pump and filled it a bit and noticed a bit difference for a short period of time that is.

you cannot charge a shock rezzy with air - for at least two reasons,
first it gets multi thousand psi of nitrogen, so no air compressor can even do it justice,
second its prolly not a good idea to have air/oxygen in this type of shock because it may turn the high temp oil into a pressurized molotoff coctail under your ****, maybe blow you kingdom come

Well I need my **** its served me well over the years, thanks for the info.
I guess I'll just go and get someone to refill it.
I thought it only took about 300 psi am I right?
Oh ya and are all the years of the DS the same meaning will an 06 shock fit on a 01 and is the procedure of removing the shock fairly simple?
I looks like just a few bolts and screws and thats it in the shop manual?
thanks

im pretty sure it will.....the swingarms changed in 04 but i think the mounting brackets for the shock still are the same.

yeah I think you guys are right, I thought it was over a grand for some reason, but 2 or 300 sounds more like it.
I've had shocks redone before, had a local bike shop charge for me, I just remember it was more than air compressors can make.
I do remember a distinct warning I read in one of my older honda manuals about using air instead of nitrogen,
yes indeed any model year ds shock is interchangable with others, I know a few people who changed from one swinger to the other using same shock with no issues.
