Default DS 650

A while back, I came on here for a friend of mine who had a broken Rotax in his DS.
The bottom end was gone.

Anyways, between what he and I were able to find out, cost-wise and trouble-wise he decided to junk it and sell it as a parts machine. I can't say I blame him at all.

All the while, I've been looking for used quads. I happened to run across a DS650... also with a blown engine. I thought maybe depending on the asking price and what exacly was broken in the engine... that it might be worth buying and fixing. (I haven't been able to find out what went yet)

Anyways, I started surfing for parts... and man, there doesn't seem to be a lot out there... and what you can find is expensive (big bore kits, etc).

So tell me guys...
Where do you get parts for a rotax?
Just through rotax or the dealer?

Anyone ever just REPAIRED a 650 rotax?

I don't like what I am seeing so far.

It really depends on what is broke and causing issues. Some things can be fixed for decent prices, and some things can be worked over for decent. Or you can go all out. Can you give us a direction that you think may be the problem?

Well, my friend's went in the bottom end at the crank I think.
I could be wrong but it seems he told me just the bottom end guts were like a grand and a risky gamble home repair.
And it would cost a bit more just to do a repair rebuild.
Upgrading was like out of this world.
He decided to just sell for parts.

This other one I found... I have no clue yet at all.
Could be anything at this point until I find out more.
It may be a parts quad too.

Might cost enough to repair that it would be cheaper buying a running one.

And you know, it's concerning to think that an overhaul might cost more that a good running one.
What happened to the old days when things weren't so disposable?

Anyways, once I do figure out what is wrong with the engine (provided the owner knows) what problem areas make it not worth fixing?
I haven't really been able to find reasonable parts online to get a general idea.
Just really expensive performance kits.

Where do you guys get things like running gear parts and plastic, etc for them?

This is where I have found some good OEM parts for my DS. Take a look through to see what they have for you. http://www.canampartshouse.com...2vv1640CFRVdYQodNzhMyg

Thanks... that was helpful.
Going back stock would be fine if possible, lightly modified if not...

I'll see if I can get to the bottom of what is wrong with the engine if possible and look up the parts there before deciding what I would be willing to put into this broken down bike.

The DS is a little bigger and heavier than what I was ideally looking for. But if I can get it and fix it really cheap, I'm willing to compromise there some.

What do you guys think a Baja chassis (with blown motor) is worth?

ebay is ur cheapest bet, but there is always someone parting some out, i have a 2001 and 2003 im parting out, but yes bombardier parts are insanely expensive from the dealership, ex: a new crank is like $800 when u can get one on ebay for like $200 if ur lucky
I've seen a DS with a rolling chassis, just missing the motor, go for $1000 on ebay

Price wise Parker Yamaha used to be the best hands down. Not anymore, some competition has arisen. Give these guys a call, if it's not cheaper than Parker they will make it so. Ask for Jesse in parts...

Years and years of research over the net and these two dealers are by far the best bang for the buck. Easy retrun policies too, if you happen to screw up your order. Freebay if you have the time to wait on the right deal. Lots of outstanding deals in the garage thread but get the members reputation clarified before buying. 30+ outstanding garage transactions, 1 complete failure of the system. Just beware.
