Not going to argue about how slow they are. The manufacterors restrict the hell out of these things. Disconnect the grey wire on the cdi to get a little more top end. Remove the spark arrestor in the exhaust (won't help top end but frees up some bottom). That's about it for free upgrades. By a CDI box with a high rev limiter and the bike will run faster. From ther on out the sky is the limit.
Lou700r runnung these bikes at full throttle all the time is almost as bad as putting around at low speeds all the time. Also alot of hill climbing or riding in soft sand will stress the engine. Lets face it the engine itself is not going to keep the oil cool. i said it before and I'll say it again, unless you are going to beef up the engine components (ie air filter, jets, exhaust, cdi and clutch) then install an oil cooler on it.

Hey CTR it sounds as if maybe the dealership may have set your quad up wrong. Probably didn't go through the bike and check all the torque settings and other standard set up procedures. The shop I got mine from forgot to take the stuff out of the carburetor as well as the plastic off the airfilter. When the started it up all kinds of crap went wrong. They had to get Can-Am permision to install new carb and air cleaner housing before even releasing the bike to me. That's why i do my homework before I buy. I dragged that useless salesman all around the bike and tested everything before leaving the dealership. I guess he figured I'd be so happy to get it that I would care about a walk around. Guess again! Anything out of the ordinary, I picked out and had them look at. If they can give you the run around on OTD price, I'll give them a hard time on the check list. Worked to my benefit as far as issues go.

Has anyone thought about changing out the sprockets to give it a better top end. Maybe a tooth in the front and the rear. This should give it a better top end right. Just got back from Pismo Beach. Gave the quad to my son there for his birthday. Only ran for 20 minutes. The shop that did the clutch springs must have done something wrond, it bound up where the kick starter could not even be pushed down. After towing it back it would start fine for a minute then bog down and die again. Before this though my 7 year old said he loved it and wanted to know if it could go faster. Pipe, cluch springs and jetting done, CDI should be here this week. Sprockets. Anyone price the big bore kits yet? I got to make this thing go.

When I was at Glamis, I spoke with the Can-Am rep. He was having the top end done on one of their DS90x bikes but it wasn't finished yet. Not sure on a price either. I'd check Maximumrpm and Hetrick racing to see what they got for them. I know the bikes are very similar to that of the Polaris Predetor and those hop up parts are readily available. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Spoke to hetrick this morning. They said ship them the motor and they will build it, the clutch and new rear sprocket. He said it will pull wheelies off the line. Go from 4hp to 13 or 14hp. $3500

WOW! That's a bit to rich for my blood. Although it would be cool to see my son ripping wheelies through the dunes. But for that price I could buy another quad.

I understand some dsx 90's need to rejet after different mods (exhaust/cdi/clutch) while others are not needing it. Please advise if you rejetted and if so what mods do you have.
Thx

Rejetting is normal done when there is something done that will effect the bikes air to fuel mixture. Some examples of when you may need to rejet are as follows.
1. When riding at a different altitude than that of which the bike was jetted at. ie you normally ride at see level but decide to go riding up in the mountains on a trip.
2. When installing a free flowing intake system. In most cases you can get away with just adjusting the air/fuel mixture screw on the carb.
3. When installing an aftermarket exhaust.
4. When puttin in a larger diameter carburetor or any kind of top end work.
If you're installing a CDI unit or clutch system it will not effect air to fuel mixture so rejetting isn't necessary. All that the CDI and clutch kits are doing is allowing for higher rev limits and altering shift points at various rpm's. I hope this helps? If not, atleast it adds to my post count;^)

Hi everyone, first time poster and thought i'd share my little experience with the ds90x. Ive had the motor in and out of the quad so many times ive lost count. Had tried multiple combination of pistons, heads, pipe and carbs and this is what i came up with.
I purchased from Hetrick a 20mm Keihin carb, pipe and cdi box, 54mm Wiseco piston and a 54mm bore. I installed it and the piston had so much compression that it wiped out my starter and starter idler gear.
I then purchased a Ultra Head with larger valves and a high pro cam from Beatrice Cycle. Here's what i did.

I took out the spark arrestor in the stock exhaust (didnt use Hetricks pipe) , 20mm carb with #108 main jet, #45 pilot jet, needle in middle position. Grinded down the top of piston to lessen the compression (not sure if this is recommended) but i called Wiseco and they dont have a lower compression piston in a 54mm. The newly ground down piston has more compression than stock but not enough to burn up the starter. Hetrick told me to add base gaskets to the cylinder to lessen the compression . DIDNT WORK because the cam chain will be way too tight. Then i installed the Ulta Head and hi pro cam. I took the DS for 100th test spin down the street and WOW what a huge difference. It screams . I added a little front brake and i could literally toast the back tires. Cant wait to try it on the dunes. The ground down piston is the only thing that worries me, i'll just have to wait and see if it holds up or if i can find another piston.

Hope that all my trial and ERORRS helped

Also,, all this talk about the Gray wire. According to my shop manual it says "The CDI limits the engine RPM in reverse when it receives 12v through the GRAY wire from reverse position switch"
