I,m a new owner of this beast. Does anyone have any input on the rear axle bearing failing. Which replacement bearings should be used tapered or ball bearing, and can a grease fitting be installed to eliminate future failure. Thx.

Only thing I can tell you is that you should do them at least once a year. Once they lock up and damage the carrier it gets very expensive.

probably no more than any other, if the outer seals are replaced with regularity they probably would never wear out.

I agree as well. Regular service is key to making the bearings last. I usually do mine every year or year and a half. After you do it a few times you can get pretty quick at it. It now takes me a couple of hours to have it done.

If you need new bearings, any jobber can supply them for you. Going by memory I think the part # is 3200xx. Maybe somebody can chime in and confirm that for me. You can also buy the seals aftermarket as well, the only problem is they are not quite deep enough.

After having a set pile up on me in the dunes once I always have a spare set of bearing the seals in the truck when we on on the trips to the US.

I replaced mine a couple of months ago, and just took the old bearings to the local Timken dealer and got the bearings, cups and seals from the same place. Also a good time to replace the rubber o-rings on the axle too, mine where dried out. There was NO to very little grease in the carrier/bearings.

I drilled the carrier and put a zerk in it so I can keep it well greased.

The Polaris Predator uses the same bearings.

Guys who ride sand should replace it more often just like their brake pads but I have my DS since 4 years now and I replaced them 1 time only. (When I bought it) They are still in good condition! When you replace it, check the condition of the 2 wear rings. MUST BE in good condition. Buy a shop manual. It will help you a lot.

Jeturtle how does one install a wear ring? Just curious....if I recall not much in the manual that states how to put on. They look to be of a pretty strong and dense material.
