It is probably a bent shift fork and that could lead to your engagement dogs wearing. You want to fix this as fast as possible. I recommend getting your engagement dogs undercut upon disassembly. It isn't cheap but, you won't want to have to do this job twice.

If you do this yourself, do a search on Hightower, he has a complete how-to on this job. I just did it myself last winter and it is one major undertaking.[img]i/expressions/musicnote.gif[/img]

I did the job myself last year as well. It is a big job but not really that hard - if you are ok with tools and fixing bike - follow the instructions and you will be ok.
