What is Normal Running Temp on the DS 650?
#11
Is your fan running most of the time? I have found quite a variance in my ESR temp guages. One will read 180 when the fan comes on and the other will read 210.
If the fan is running all the time then you probably are lean. If it isn't, I wouldn't worry about a temp guage reading between 200 and 210. My streetbike quad (used to be mine, lol)runs between 208 and 219 normally.
Besides, our engines are more efficient at these temps than at 120 to 160 like some guys try to run.

I should not when i said running hard that sometimes does not mean driving fast. As long as i can keep moving the temp stays down. The worst is witer ridding with big RPM's an little air movement.

I have an inline probe with the gauge on my dash and the DS def gets hot quick when its just sitting or putting super slow (200ish). I can ride as hard as I want but as long as im moving it stays cool. Even when it gets 200-210 sitting for a long time, it will go back down 20-40* after a quick run through the gears. Sometimes I almost worry im running TOO cool when im running flat out! The DS cooling system does well stock, and with a couple little mods almost does too well

Im with you on the running to cool thing but its better then to hot
In the CA. sun it can heeeeeettttt up fast so I like the cooling that the 730 gets me
anf the big carbs like to be rich, that also helps on cooling

THe DS fan is set to come on at 203* and red light at 239*. You can verify the accuracy of your temp gauge by when fan comes on. MY ESR is pretty spot on...

DSengineer hit the nail on the head here - the Bomb engineers designed this bike to have a fan come on at 203 degrees - that obviously means it was meant for it and is totally normal to operate at this temp. With a warning light set to not even come on til 239...being 210 on my gauge doesn't bother me at all.
If I am cruising or bowling, I'm in the 190's on a hot summers day (ESR gauge on OUTLET of motor, not the INLET!). If I am technical riding 2nd gear on tight trails, my fan is gonna come on and I'll be between 200 and 205. If its winter time and really cold I may not see anything over 180.
Don't try to get a cooler thermostat, its wide open well before you reach the temp at which the fan comes on. a cooler thermostat will only cause less appropriate fuel atomization on cold days.
I have used those stupid super coolers - useless! I have changed to engine ice from antifreeze mix - very small improvement, almost unoticable! Redline water wetter - negligable! Radiator shrouds??!?!?!!?? Like I said, my fan ONLY runs when traveling slow speed on technical trails in low gear - there's no air for them to scoop!
I have had a gauge to actually see real world results for everything I have tried, and now feel stupid for falling for so many useless gimics. I stripped off the crap, run OEM cooling system, the way engineers designed it.
