ds650 help hooking up and oppinions
#1
I am having a problem hooking up, I have 20x 10 rear tires, should I look at putting the 16 tooth back on or going to bigger rear tires? Just barely popping up off the line if too far back or spinning the wheels if too far forward.
What else is there that will make a significant difference in acceleration without doing engine mods. I do all types of riding mostly the trails though. Only get to open her up a couple times a year at the dunes in OK. Planning on spending more time at St. Joe state park in MO.
Also once heard someone say that knocking off 10 pounds is equivalent to 1 horse, is this correct? I am a bigger guy and could stand to shave off a 100 pounds to be considered skinny. I am tired of my skinny buddy on a YFZ450 sticking in there with me. He has same mods minus the port and polish, but his seems to hook up a lot better.
Thanks for any input you guys can give....

Probably wouldn't hurt to go with a 15t 22" rear set up. There is weight to be shaved on these things depending on where you ride. Air box and snorkels, front fenders and brackets, rear fender and heel guards, lots of options on getting rid of weight. Just depends on how much mud/water you ride around...

I pretty much quit riding in the mud and water, if I do water at all it is is very slow as I have already gotten rid of the airbox. Is the 520 conversion really all they say it is

I agree with Ace, go with 22" Haulers or Extremes, 8 or 9 paddles and you'll hook up twice as good! The 20"'s just sit there and dig holes! I just made that switch myself. 520 conversion always helps but tires are better at this point for what you're doing.

Tim, how is the swinger working?? keeps the front down now? the TM working okay i assume. i went to 22x11x8- 8 paddle extreme hauler for the dunnes. i am looking to switch to a 22 or 23 inch tire in the rear but am not willing to pay the $$ for razor II's. i just dropped the gearing on mine to a 14tooth up front. since the build, the RPM "sweet spot" has changed a bit and slow trail riding will be easier with this gearing. also i'm hopeing to get a 3rd gear launch at the dunnes. in the dirt... can't hook up hardly at all. tear through a set of tires every year with all the wheel spin i get.

For St Joes get some pro wedge 1's or 4snows, the 15t front also. Don't get cheap on the 520 chain & sprocket. but you don't have to get the $3xx plus kits either.
Paddle brats work good also , plus you can run them at the dunes too.
