ds450 clutch problems
#1
first off, hey, harley here, new to the site, but not to the sport.
heres the story...
in November i was talked into buying a 08 ds450 efi, and picked it up just in time for thanksgiving. i rode it for a week straight, had no problems till my clutch started squealing. got home, looked online and saw others had this happen too. so no big deal. did my oil change, took it back out and it ran great. then my next ride, just a week later, my clutch completely GAVE OUT. as in i pulled in the lever, and it failed to disengage. so i thought the cord was caught somewhere. but it wasn't. got back to camp and took the clutch apart, but couldn't see a problem, so i reassembled it, and it worked fine. well it continued to do this for another two weeks, after about 2 hours of riding the clutch would get stuck engaged. ****, just before the Christmas and new years ride. well i left the quad at home, and just borrowed a bike. so when i finally get back into town i take the quad to my local shop, (January 13th), and they say i need a new clutch, but that BRP has a update clutch recall or something, and that they'll order parts right away. so here it is, February 17th and i still have no quad. over a month in the shop now, and they say they are waiting on a set of hexagonal bolts that were supposed to come with the clutch, but didn't, so had to be ordered separately. ive called BRP and they have been ridiculously unhelpful with finding out were the parts areand when they are supposed to arrive. just wondering if anyone else has faced this dilemma with ordering new parts and waiting.

so i got a hold of the shop, and they said there waiting for a certain bolt, and gave me the part number, but i looked at BRPs online catalog and its a bolt for the starter...wtf? anyone know whats going on here?

Maybe you could look into aftermarket clutches, do it yourself, and try to avoid working with the stupid dealer. And welcome to the Connection man.

haha thanks man....yea i was thinking of just going with a Hinson...but those were running over $500...this update was free...plus their saying that BRP is reimbursing them for labor, so if i want to get it done on my own schedule i had to pay them for labor AND the holding charge of something ridiculous like $50 per day...times that by a month and a half...kinda outta my price range or a stupid clutch. thanks though.

Mine squeels every now and then, hopefully it dont go out. The only update i've heard of is the flywheel bolts. Mine is at the local dealership right now getting that done.

ok, update.
i called them on the mix up of parts and their story now is that the clutch has been in, but they hadnt put it in yet because of the flywheel update parts not being in. told them to f*ck the flywheel parts and get the clutch done! so they said ok no prob itll be ready by tonight...then of course i get a call...there are only 5 out of the 6 bolts needed and my pressure plate is cracked...and their saying thats my fault! told them to overnite express parts from BRP and that they should cover the cost cuz i havent even ridden the bike since decmeber! how could i break it!?!? aghhh!!! i shoulda got a honda!

This Clutch issue with the DS450 is BS. Many Dealers are unaware of it or don't tell ya about it. Here is a Link to the 2009-9 Service Bulletin. If your Engine Number is Before MY6748166 then you could possibly get the work done for free if under warranty. Call your Dealer and give them your VIN Number.
Here is a link to a pic of the SB and a good thread of information.

I was shocked to find out these issues after my purchase. I wish the dealer at least said something to me when they did my recall work that there is a great chance I will fry my clutch

hey thanks for the replies. yea i got it covered, but i had to pay for shipping cuz i told them i wanted it fixed by the next day or im contacting the owner ( a friend of a friend), so of course they got it done asap. best part....NONE of the updates were taken care of. the whole damn reason i had to wait almost 2 months to get my bike and NOTHING was done. ill never go to north hollywood honda again.
best part pt2. BRP has still not received any orders regarding the update material from the dealership. looks like ill be doing it myself.
on a separate note. anyone know where i can get aftermarket fenders? or are you guys just cutting em? and whats a good efi to run? got the motoworks sr4 slip on and opened box.

I have a copy of the clutch SB. Does anyone have PDFs of the SBs for:
- Flywheel bolts
- EVU flash for limp mode
- Rear motor mount
- Replace stock hose clamps
- Heat tape under gas tank
Does the bike need to be under warranty to get these fixed?
