2000 DS 650 Turbo Question
#12
i dont understand why the ds's are such hard to turbo. seems like raptors and 450's arent as big of a problem. Is it just the ecm and fuel injection that are used in the kits the cause of the problems? Can't you guys use the stuff they are using on the raptors? a few guys on here say it was a pretty simple deal and tuning is a minimum and others give nightmarish stories.....
Anyone can plumb a turbo into an exhaust of something with a Craftsman buzzbox welder in their garage, but getting a carburetor to run correctly and reliably takes the correct components and experience.
Reason those companies gave it up... It has nothing to do with the DS design, it's their kit concepts were JUNK!
Snowmobile performance shops have been successfully turbocharging and supercharging carb's engines since the late 1990's. Guys are still boosting these sleds today and now reliably boosted carb'd 2-strokes are becoming more common, as well.
These are being boosted on stock motors, the amount of boost you can run is regulated by fuel quality (octane) to prevent detonation, usually in order of up to 33% increase in power can be done without getting into lowering the compression, etc. For bigger boost and HP is when you'd need to drop in dished pistons, etc. unless you plan to run race fuels.
No reason a stock DS can't be boosted and still be trail friendly, has to be built right is all.

Interest Factor only - What happened to KMS - I thought they had the whole package figured out ?
I remember seeing a DS with fuel injection on it a Sand Sports Show and the Dirt Wheels Test made it sound like it was all figured out with the turbo and all.

They probably did have it figured out...and then the barometer and temp changed the next day...I dont think it was all the way figured out. What did happen to KMS?...pfffff...mrfreebird probably thinks I am making slanderous builder comments.

KMS is still in pheonix Az. The turbo in a box concepte just didn't work, just to many variables, For everyone infor I run a kms turbo system on my ds, but not without problems. and I'am one of a few that has figured out well maybe. The bigest problems is tuning. with a carb you just change a couple of jets adjust the air screw and your good to go. with the megga squirt fuel injection, a change in temp, elevation, or barrometric presure and your fuel map is all screwed up you have to change it. Yes, you can run an o2 sensor to auto adjust the air fuel setting but on the ds single cylinder turbo it like to be on the rich side say 12.5 to13.5 The o2 sensor wants to lean it to 14.7/1 and that equals burned piston. I've lost four 800 motors and four turbos trying to get it right.
