Default 2000 DS650 questions

I have a 2000 DS 650 that is being a pain in my butt to get running. (I'm a 2-stroker) I can't get it to start and do not think I want to pull start it with my Banshee. I have cleaned the carb, checked the valve clearance, and adjusted the timing. The timing is ALWAYS 1/2 a tooth out.

The second concern is about a possible air leak in the bottom end. When the plug that you remove to manually turn the engine over is out and the engine is being turned over with the starter, there is a good bit of air coming out of it. I can stand back 2-3 feet and feel the air pressure from the hole. Could this be what is causing my 650 to not run?

Thanks in advance.
