Default Ds axle tube/carrier 03 baja vs 05

So we were riding several weeks ago and the rear end went out. 1st trip with the Ds's since we got em. Trashed the axle tube/bearing carrier. So I bought one off ebay for an 05. We are dealing with a 03 Baja. So after getting it realized the two carriers looked a little different and sure enough they have different part numbers. Installed the carrier into swing arm no problem, brake clip went on like it was suppose to but the axle wont go in all the way. Bearings and seals are the same for all years. I can't get the axle to go in far enough to set the little cir clip on the big *** preloader/lock nut deal. I am within an inch or 2. Starting to think maybe this 05 unit has the bearings further out or something. Not really sure. Reading the ds650 site and looking through bikebandit it's clear in 04 alot changed out back including the carrier, the carrier lock nut, axle, hubs, ect.

Any advice, Am I doing something wrong here. Like I said the rear end was trashed so there was no hope in seeing how it is suppose to come apart.

Maybe it just aint meant to be.

Thanks

THe axles themselves also changed in 04 (1" shorter on each side) so that may be your problem. I don't know if you can run the older axle with the newer carrier. THey are designed to work together.

Right. I knew the axle was shorter but you'd figure the longer would still work. The center section appears identical. The big difference I think is the lock nut setup which could be our problem. 00-03 has the big chunk of metal with a lock screw while the 04+ had a bolt type locking nut and I have no clue how that setup works. 00-03 has a cir clip, a race looking washer that goes between the cir clip and the locking nut which allows the large locking nut to spin to set the proper preload on the bearings.
