Front spocket removal question
#1
First off I do not have a manual for my 07 ds650. I am trying to get the front sprocket off to swap it with a 14-15t. I removed the cover, big nut and washer, and loosened the chain but it doesn't seem to want to come off, even with a puller, before i put the heat to it is there anything I'm missing? I'm guessing there is a seal behind there so heat is probably not a good idea but i want this thing off. Thanks in advance for the help, and yes i realize the irony of my screen name (Not my specialty).lol

That is very strange, I know on mine (05 650X) once I got the big retaining nut off the gear just slid right off. I have never had any problems with it and I have changed that gear numerous times. Maybe see if you can get a puller and apply some light pressure to get it so budge migh just be rusted on?.... I dont think there was ever a design change in them from 05-07. Oh and deff dont heat it up, there is a seal right there and that would prob just create an oil leak for ya.

Never seen one not just fall off! Did you loosen the chain? Should be just a 30mm nut and a washer with locking tabs, "normally" slides right off when those two items are removed.
Only thing I can think of is you've got the chain extremely tight and it's binding the sprocket.

Alright then, soak that mother with penetrating oil, get a deep well socket big enough to clear the threads on the shaft, then smack the **** out of it. Several times if need be, until the sprocket falls off.
Be a good time to understand why a coat of anti-sieze or heavy grease on the splines is a good thing when changing sprockets. Especially if you're riding in wet or muddy conditions.

So, smacking the spocket with an oversize socket isint going to hurt anything behind the sprocket?

even if you have the slightest tension on the chain pulling the sprocket...it will not come off..pull the chain right away from the sprocket then try a couple light smacks wont hurt to maybe break it loose....

Well its off. So now i have a decision to make, try the 14 or the 15t first. I have a stock 40 in the back. The problem i was having was that when following my friend at lower speeds i was constantly shifting between 1ts and 2nd, which was a pain in the ****, becaus i kept hitting nuetral. So what i wanted was to start in second and just switch back and forth between 2nd and 3rd. As long as the quad can do 50 top end i'm good. Positive opinions welcome.
