It's more like a Hum-Vee or Unimog. Wait, Unimog is a Mercedes, so yeah I guess it is. Would you rather have one of those for 4-wheeling, or a 3/4 ton pick up truck? (The RMK's equilavent)

Well, I am in Austria, and ATVs are not very common over here.

I have an old mountain-cabin and I will start to do some restorations asap because the roof is in a bad condition.....another new chimney, well you know.....all the things which have to be done at an old cabin.

There is just a steep trail going up there - absolutely no way to climb up with my half-ton Pickup truck. So I am thinking of buying an ATV - but I have no experience in that kinda stuff.

I am afraid to buy any junk because I must order from catalog - almost no models are in stock at the dealers.

So I found several dealers and I have the choice between polaris RMK , an Arctic Cat 500, the Traxter with automatic and maybe the the Polaris Magnum .

These cost between 18000 and 26000. The hell of an amount, so I really want to make the best deal I can get. I want to buy something rugged for working purpose, which causes no (or few) trouble because it ll take a long time to get spare-parts over here.

So, again, what ATV would you recommend to buy?

Martin

BTW: Best Rgds to AK. I was working as a guide in the Yukon and AK in the earlier days. AK is great - love it.

Well, if I had to pick between those three, I would definatly chose the Traxter. The other machines are fine, but I don't think they will last very long. I think they are higher maintanence machines. But I'm sure the prices are also cheaper. Also the Traxter is a Bombardier, owner of Rotax GmbH. So the Traxter uses a Rotax motor, since the factory is your country, you might even be able to get parts from them! Actually I kinda doubt that but it would be nice wouldn't it? Remember you will get what you pay for. So if you can afford it, buy the Traxter.

Yeah, I spent 7 years living in the "Lower 48" states as we call them. It was nice, but kinda like going to another country I guess. There is nothing that can compare to Alaska. well maybe, but I havn't seen everything yet......

Actually I would think a Traxter or the new Bigger and Better Quest-650 should be available in Austria without as much tax because the motor is made there. The latest issue of Dirtwheels Magazine includes a test of the new Quest IN AUSTRIA! Something worth checking out. And if the Polaris is a pick-up truck and the Quest is a Hum-Vee, there is no question which is better. (Quest)

I visited the KTM factory outside Salzberg in 1972. It was the first time I'd seen a MIG welder. And the first time I'd seen their awesome new two stroke motor, first released as a 175 enduro. I was 17 years old, it was very cool. The castle in Salzburg was equally
impressive, as was the wienershnitzel.

we do not have any chance to get a rotax engine over here because it is all for export. And about the tax: We have 20 5 sales tax plus 22 % toll, so an ATV costs between 20 and 26 K over here. It is a mess.

I am approx. 200 Mls west of Salzburg. Times have changed since 72,come for a visit and i ll take you out there to the mountains, without an ATV because it isnt alllowed, but if you are a hiker....

Yes, you are right. The Bombardier is a great machine. But I ordered a Polaeris yesterday because the Service of Bombardier is a 5 hoursa drive from here. Polaris is half an hour and they have a large warehouse with spareparts in Italy.

But if Bomb. would have an Service in this area....I would have bought a Traxter.

I tried to make the move to AK for years, but I never found a suitable job up there. In AK, they need welders and heavy duty equipoment mechanics, but no cabinetmakers.

You live in my dream-country, man.

So long
