Baja DS650 question?
#1
Hey, guys I'm new to the Bomber forum. I'm usually on the Yamaha one.
Here's my question I called the Bomber dealer today and they told me that there is ONLY going to be a Baja version. Which if true would be great IMO.
Has anyone else heard this? I'd like to get the Baja version he tols me I wouldn't have to put a deposit down cause there should be enogh to go around. He also told me to call back next week to see if they got them yet. ANy opinions or info would be great. Also anything you guys recommend right away as far as mods. I've heard there a little twitchy at speed. Any other problem and what to do about them. TIA

....The "twitchiness" you speak of is fixed with the aftermarket upper A-arms, which have more "caster", or in the case of the adjustable A-arms, allow you to increase the caster. I have TimmyBoys, and they are fantastic. Handling is awesome, and they are a few pounds lighter than stock as well. This has supposedly been fixed on the new Baja edition.
...The tires are supposed to be better, the Kendas sucked, many of us have XCT's and love them.
.....If the Baja is indeed the only version available, that would explain the fire sale they have been having on DS-650's.
... I sure would like that tach. The front mounted fan is a good idea too. No electric motor could stand being that close to the exhaust headers for long.
.....I wonder if they did anything about the chain roller? I have not had a problem with mine, I guess I've kept it properly adjusted.
But lots of guys have had problems with them.
.....It seems the Baja has addressed all the problems, all minor, of the DS-650, plus adding the tach. But I still like the yellow plastic better, and since I've done most of these mods anyway I am going to keep my DS, install the front fan, maybe build a pair of lower A-arms with a lower shock mount to lower the front end a tad, and lose a few more pounds. And I gotta get that CDI from Knutz, that and the tach would be a good combo.
....Oh yeah, the front shocks suck. If they are still the Arvin RydeFX, get rid of them and buy Works or better, Elka, TCS. Unless they have revalved them, the RydeFX have WAY too much rebound dampening, enough for a Mack truck.

WOW, Thanks alot for all the good info. I also like the yellow plastic better not to mention it would match my truck. I found a brand new 2001 for $5300
showroom model. With the money I save with that I can sell my Raptor and turn out even. I have the Elka's on my Raptor and have nothing but good things to say about them. Very well built items. I'll definately be getting those for the DS.
I noticed you also have a Raptor could you give me your opinion
on which one you like better.
Thanks for your time.

So far I haven't had any problem with the rear mounted fan (knock on wood)but would like to have a back up. Does the front mounted fan on the Baja fit the regular DS without modifications? Does anyone know if its the same fan just mounted to the other side of the radiator and made a pusher? It would seem that a little bit larger fan would help.

.......I've got the Spal "pusher" for my DS. Off-Road warehouse has them, as well as stock replacement fans. The Pusher I picked out is one size larger than stock, 7.5" SPAL type VA14-AP7/C-34S. Phone # is 858-565-7792.
......I have not yet installed it. I'm anticipating a little problem getting the screen back on, even with a large hole cut in it. It may have to be split down the middle and each half fit in from the side. I'd like to see how they do it on the Baja before I start cutting.
......The fan itself should slide in from the side and down, fitting very snugly right in the lower front of the radiator. I am going to leave the stock fan installed and wire this one up to it. The additional cooling should keep the stock fan from going out. I blew mine in the heat of summer here, back in June. I replaced the stock fan and ordered this pusher. Replacing the stock fan is a real pain. The headers are really in the way.
.....As far as Raptor VS. DS,,, well, they are both great quads. The Raptor is lighter and flies and wheelies better. The DS is bigger, more refined, much more comfortable if you are over 6' tall. 2002 Raptors get a much needed gear fix. The jump from 1st to 2nd is a big one, and sometimes it seems like it just doesn't have the right gear. Widening is a must. Reversing the front wheels and an aftermarket rear axle does that.
.....Right now the sale of the century is on DS-650's. With plenty of savings to trick it out right up to Baja specs. Tires, Shocks, A-arms, pusher fan, Tach? Lights?
.....I just bought new jerseys, pants, gloves and helmet all in yellow.
I'll be damned if I'm changing colors now!!

Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it. I moving out to Vegas area in about a month or so I'm actually flying out tomorrow to look at houses. That's one of the reasons I'm getting a DS. The reliability factor of the Raptor
is getting on my nerves and instead of putting more money in it now with a-arms and an axle I think I'll just try a DS. Thanks again

I just put the front mount fan on my DS. It was easier than I thought it would be. It fits right in there in front of the radiator, and I was able to use the stock screen in one piece with a hole torched in it the size of the fan. Then I put the round piece I cut out back in front of the fan and snap-tied the whole thing together. The front fan is near the bottom of the radiator, where the rear fan is near the top. They overlap about half-way. I'd like to just put a plug on the new fan and plug it in when I want the extra cooling, or a spare fan. Now I need that Baja tach and a CDI from Knutz.
