End cap modification?

1.Performance, me go fast I like 2.noise, I Oregon dune 15-20 times a year. Big fines not fine. 3.price-quality tie-trade off, price it too high and I'd rather put the money towards a full pipe and fines. Last place, looks, my stock pipe looks more like a stove pipe all the time. I would slap on a psychedelic pinwheel if it would outflow my stock endcap and beat the Oregon db limit. Hey, if that works, do you owe H.G. Wells a beer and a girl?

Wow, you guys are demanding. LOL I didn't think noise would be such a high concern, but it looks like it is. The problem is, noise sort of equals power. The leading design I had just slipped it's way back. I believe it would have made slightly better power, but it would have been a good bit louder. Please keep the input coming, I'm getting a better picture of what you want, and I think I can make it. I just got hold of a stock DS for testing these caps for the next month, so continue to let me know what you all want.

Knutz, if it weren't for the Oregon noise regulations I would have bought a custom x2. Unfortunately that pipe couldn't pass. I cut the baffles out of my end cap and that seemed to make a little difference on the low end and it's only sighlty louder.
I believe noise should be an issue regardless of regulations. I've seen too many people with loud a$$ bikes make a nuisance of themselves around campgrounds and parking lots. A piped 4 stroke can be heard for miles up in the woods, long after 2 strokes fade away. Now we're losing the woods as a riding area.
While my neighbors can't do anything about me riding on my private driveway, I'd rather they waved than gave me the finger.

I completly understand the point of view of keeping noise under control. I guess I'm just a little spoiled living out in the desert. For us, dust control is more important than noise. Due to dust, we have to make sure we ride well away from our nieghbors. In the desert, the noise doesn't seem to bother people much. That point has been noted, and the design will now be to get as good of a power increase as we can, while keeping noise under control. My fabricator insists that quality be top shelf, so there really isn't a choice on that. It will be more expencive than the Pingry unit though, but you'll be getting a much better product as well. I see that looks are not a primary concern though, maybe we can save some money on that area then. Maybe powder coat mild steel instead of building it out of stainless or alluminum. I just don't want to make it so nice that it cost almost as much as the big manufacturers can build a slip on for.

Knutz...Soon as I get the HMF spark arrestor, ordered this morning, I'll send you my end cap, with the extra burrito baffle. Are you going to measure sound levels as well as horsepower? With a bunch of variations you're bound to come up with a winner.
.....I think a powder coated steel endcap that really worked, wasn't too loud and cost $50 to $70 would be a big hit. The stock exhaust is really pretty good...except for that very restrictive end cap. For me it has to have a spark arrestor for the National Forests, and not be too loud 'cause sometimes I ride where I'm not supposed to. Stealth factor you know.....

End cap, Ok here goes:
1) Performance...at least a little or whats the use
2) Noise...quiet please
3) Quality....needs to last
4) Looks...anything would be better than the two little stock tubes
5) Price...within reason of course

I now see that performance is needed, but noise is next, so they will not be all out power caps like our first design. As for the price being between $50-$70, I doubt I can do that. For that sort of money, you get some thing like the Pingry unit. Although I want to keep them cheaper than any slip on, I don't think I can make a quality unit for that cheap, but we will see what sort of design works best for us. I believe everyone ranked quality over price. Obviously, it will not be priced out of this world, but you'll be getting much more for your money that Pingrys tip. We full well plan to have spark arrestors in them, but getting forestry service approval for it may be difficult[read expensive]. I understand that rangers don't look for a forestry service stamp anyway, they just stick something in the pipe to check. One advantage we will have over a slip on or a full exhaust is that you can change back to the stock exhaust tip if you do ride in an enforced, restricted area in about 3 minutes.

I agree that it doesn't need to be Forest Service approved, and a screen would work just fine. Though the screen might need to be stainless, the rest could be mild steel which would keep the price down. If it delivers a better power band, and isn't too loud, I think you could sell us all one for, say,, $79?
......One thing I really like about the stock exhaust as compared to the few aftermarket pipes I've seen is the megaphone shaped inner core. If the end cap/baffle/spark arrestor were to start out with a "reverse cone" leading into an inner tailpipe which then exited out sideways then back into the final tailpiece as it passes through a spark arrestor screen.?...If you are interested, I'll draw it up for you, or if you have an extra end cap I'll make you one and send it to you with my first one....I want that free drink! the girl would be nice too....Be sure to call it an end cap around my wife though. First guy to call it a tail piece in front of her and I lose out on a trip to Vegas!!

And you think that could be made for $79 retail? This has to be something made from scratch, not a modified stock one, and we do have to keep the doors open[read- not lose money]. If you can make one like you describe, I'd love to test it. When you do it though, keep track of how long it takes and what material is used.
