End cap modification?
#31
I think I could add my little inner reverse cone to my existing endcap.
And you make the point correctly that we are modifying the existing piece where you are working from scratch. But once you decide on a design, presumably after testing numerous "art projects" like mine, you will streamline it's design and manufacture. A few stamped out pieces, like the end piece itself and maybe some baffle pieces, a stainless screen for the spark arrestor, some cutting and welding and, voila'.
When I look at the materials and fabrication in this HMF slip-on for $189, geez it's all stainless, even my end cap from scratch is a snap compared to this. You gotta retail it for under $100. This is a volume item, I only get the girl if you make big bucks off this so don't over price it!

I sent back the HMF slip-on for the DS and the Raptor today. They are both way too loud for our purposes. HMF offered to replace them both with their new Quiet Core muffler and I am going to take them up on it for the Raptor. But for the DS I think I will stay with my END CAP for a while.. I rode the DS around the field for a few and tried to get used to the noise, and I eventually could, but I know my neighbors are going to hate it. The modified end cap works so well and is just loud enough, but not too loud, with all the punch of the slip-ons. SO far I have tried and sent back both the FMF and the HMF slip-ons. Both are very nice high quality units, but have no baffles and are just a straight through design.
I think the DS muffler has unique qualities that make it a natural for a modified end cap. The inside screen opens up toward the middle, providing a shape for a "reverse cone megaphone" design that can still incorporate a baffle and spark arrestor.
.....For someone who wants ultimate power without regard to how noisy, there are plenty of aftermarket pipes.
....For those of us who want a little more power with not much more noise, for not much dough, the modified end cap is a natural, especially one that includes baffles and a spark arrestor and is dyno tuned for maximum power with acceptable noise levels.
.....Knutz, I need to come up to Vegas to get the tranny overhauled in my '92 Chevy truck. Driveline Service Co. near the Rio Hotel. It's one of those places that puts all the right parts in, I drive up and they do it for me in two days. I have a little fun and get a little vacation in for the price of shipping the tranny down here and letting the local shmucks do it. How about I bring my DS with a couple of versions of my end cap and we throw it on the DYNO? When are you planning on doing your end cap dyno tests? Mid December would be good for me...This way I could get my DS fine tuned in the process and find out if my end cap really works or is just my imagingation. I have 3 versions of it I could quickly interchange. What I don't have is the stock end cap to compare it with, or an aftermarket pipe. Sound interesting?

I'm hoping to do my dyno work in about 2 weeks, but if you want to cover the dyno time, we can do the work on yours also. I have a stock cap as well as after market exhaust. I also have a Custom X we can compair against if your intrested.
Just a heads up, my buddy is taking Drivline Services to court because they told him they built him a 31 spline 9" rear-end when they actually built a 28 spline. They charged him more for the 31 spline and would not refund the money when they were caught cheating him. I've never used them myself, and can't swear that this is true, just passing on what I've heard.

Sounds like we're creeping up on Thanksgiving....Kids and school,,,our 4 year old that's not in school,,,and my wife does NOT want to take kids to Vegas,,,,been there done that....Gonna have to hash this one out. I think Every baby sitter within 200 miles has been tipped off about our 4 year old.....Remember when life revolved around Cars and Girls? Now it's Kids and Quads,,,,Could be worse.
....I'd be more than happy to pay for the dyno time on my quad, I'd be getting it "dyno tuned" after all. It is stock except for the CDI, K&N, and end cap. Throwing a few other pipes on it would be enlightening I'm sure. What do you think it would cost?
.....That's too bad to hear that about Driveline Services. Auto repair is full of crooks and lawsuits. The tranny in this truck has been great, for a 700R that has a deserved reputation for being too light. What I want is to have this one rebuilt, not exchange it for a lemon.
I plan on marking the tranny so there is no question about getting IT back and not some other. Serial numbers are good too.
