Has anyone upgraded their cdi box and some how gotten a bad one?[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif[/img]

why don't you switch them out, and see what happens. There is a good mechanic 10 miles from my house. He is open on sat.

That is an excelent idea, put your stock CDI back on and see if makes power right up to the rev limiter. This is a free test and very easy to perform unless you dont have your stock CDI.

Another easy option, is to swap CDIs with your friend who is beating you by 25-ish feet. If the lag goes with the CDI you know the answer. I think the overall jist is that you need to put a known good CDI on your DS to test wether or not yours is good or not.
