Baja's first trip to the dunes.........(long)
#1
Well, we decided to brave the cold and go out to Little Sahara Utah. It really turned out to be a great day, the best day I have had in awhile.
The weather was kind of on the cold side (25 degrees up to about 35 degrees). But the sun was shining and that made it feel more like it was in the 40's.
Anyway the bike ran great, I am in love with this machine. Unlike my raptor the gearing is right on and the bike is easier to ride.
I brought my raptor out so that we could compare the two in the sand, and I was very pleased with the baja. My buddy tried out the baja and I had to make him give me my bike back. He just wanted to keep on riding it. It is that much fun.
I think we will have another bombardier owner in the ranks pretty soon.
I was pretty close to being able to pull 3rd up sand mountain, second it was running pretty close to the rev limiter and in fact bounced off of it a couple times. I guess I need a cdi soon.
I first ran around on the stock ohtsu tires and they did pretty well, but soon I decided to try out the new paddles. When I bought the bike, the guy made me a killer deal on whatever paddles I wanted.
It took me some time to decided, but I decided to go with the 20x10x10 skat trak haulers with 8 paddles. I think I made the perfect choice. They ran great, and everyone told me that they are harder to turn then the edges or v type paddle, but I felt like I could turn easier and had much more control and stability. Although, I am comparing them to the stu sand skate II's that are on my raptor, so maybe not a fair comparison with different bikes and different tires.
Anyway I love the tires and I love the bike, the trip was a blast and I got the bug. I will be out there again soon, maybe early next month and for sure on memorial day, labor day, and many days in between.
Sorry for such a long post.
By the way did I mention I love this machine.

Bat,
Thanks for a fun weekend. I'm glad we braved the cold weather.
I appreciate you letting me take out the BAJA.
Like he said I did not want to give it back. I have a 400ex and there was a lot of similarities. How-ever, the BAJA kicked some serious A$$. It looks like a big and heavy bike but it certainly didnt feel that way. It was easier to turn and boy did it suck up the whoops. I loved the power band from about 4000 to 8000 rpm. The low end could use some help but I think you could get used to it. I would definetly give the four-stroke dune machine to the Baja.

1kmills, you are welcome and thanks again for having me down to the house and your hospitality.
I agree that the bottom end power is lacking, it kind of reminds me of my old banshee, when it is on watch out, but fall out of the power band and you are done.
I do have a K&N jet kit and a big gun exhaust to put on and hopefully that will help a bit.
I will keep you guys updated on that.
Thanks

Hey it sounds like you are really getting to like your DS Baja. I told you so. After you get that stuff on it we'll have to race. By the way this is T.J. in G.R.. In Case you didn't know about it, there is usualy a pretty big gathering at Killpecker on Memorial weekend. It is pretty fun and there was a good showing last year. Have you rode there yet? I have been really wanting to hit little Sahara. Let me know the next time your going and maybe we can follow along. Sounds fun. I wish I was there.

Demon, I have ridden out at killpecker dunes, but not with my baja. It has been just too cold around here.
When I go out to killpecker, I take my old jeep, because the road is soooooo baddddddd. I hate that road. They really need to grade it out.
Anyway, I really like little sahara, because it is so big and you can pretty much ride anywhere. I am a duner at heart and that is my thing. This summer we are going to do several trips to little sahara and also at least one up to saint anthonys in idaho. I will be going back down to Little sahara in March for sure for a weekend trip and probably one more day trip hopefully in february. Then after march we will be duning probably once a month at the bigger dunes and I will be trying to hit killpecker dunes at least every other weekend.

Hey Bat, I'll be making my first trip to Little Sahara for Memorial Day. Lets try to get a good showing of DS's out there. I'll have one more with me and maybe I can talk Knutz into going.

Vegas, I am there. I have it on my schedule and I am sure my buddy will be there also. He does not ride a Ds yet. He has a 400 that is a pretty strong bike. He wants a DS now.
This past saturday there were only 2-3 Ds's out at little sahara, but there were only about 50 trucks there total. It was pretty cold and I know that memorial weekend is a big event out there.
It should be a blast. Lets keep in contact and hook up out there on memorial weekend.
I would love to see knutz run and get a chance to talk in person to him and if he comes I think he could probably sell a few people on the pami kits.
take care
