What is the best all around set up for the front and rear gearing? If I were to go with a 15T front and 42T rear would I sacrifce top end? My riding is 50/50 desert to Glamis. Sand45, you were do'in great on the hills and at the drags; did you change your front sproket for each event? I have 22" Haulers on order for the sand and will probably go with 22" Holeshot XCT's for the dirt.

LEDGER...I used the same gearing for both events.15 tooth up front and 43 tooth in rear.this combo makes the Ds FLY !!I raced raptors and other DS on MLK all weekend long and did very well. One great thing about this gearing is it lets you get a real good hole shot on drag races or hill drags.IT also lets you pop your front end up through the whoops on comand. Top speed is good when racing at the sand drags i only made forth gear did not have room to hit fifth gear. If running this combo i really recomend some kind of rev box!

Stock 16/40 sprockets figure out at a 2.5 ratio, 15/42 works out to 2.8 or about a 12% change. Going from the stock 20" tires to 22" is a 10% change, you would be loosing very little top end. Paddle tires in the sand really pull so you don't want to be geared too high for quick take offs. Sand conditions, hard & wet or loose & dry, and tire pressure all have effect as well.

Thanks for the info guys. I just did an advanced search for "sprocket" in the title and got some more good information on changing the bad boys out. I'll be ready for Pres weekend in Glamis!

Ledger, if I remember correctly you are a fairly big guy. Well SAND45's set up works extremely well for him. You will sacrifice on top though. But once Jeff gets my vids up you'll see me race him a few times and he almost ALWAYS gets the hole shot. If I didn't have so much power, I'd never catch him. Just for the record I'm running 16/41 with 21 inch paddles on the Pig.

sand45,
two questions
1. with your sprocket change did you have to lengthen your chain- if so 1 or 2 links?
2. what type of rear sprocket protection do you have? stock or other?
thanks
- I think I may try the same set up when I'm hill shooting.

Majorecho...I cant remember how many links to a stock chain, but i had to have 110 links. I used the stock sprocket protector. It will rub just a little bit but after one ride and its all good.

Thats a good set up for the sand but it will suck for the hard pack drag racing. You will seriously spin tires so I would get 22's for the hard pack.

This is a great set up with 22" tires. I would never recomend running any thing less than a 22" on this gearing. If i need a little more top end i would change the front sprocket back to a 16 tooth sprocket. I run into people using 17 tooth sprocket and stock rear sprocket i just dont understand!!! It seems like it would take quiet a long.. long ..run way to get up to speed.
