We regularly ride mountain trails on my DS and my son's Raptor. We have a friend in Reno we want to visit, along with 3TV in Utah.
We've all seen pictures of the rock crawler 4x4's doing the bad stretches of the Rubicon, most of which have detours for the less capable. Anybody have any personal knowledge here? We want to do the Paiute Trail, Coral Pink Sand-dunes, and the Rubicon. I know the Grizz would make it fine, but I like riding my DS so much more, and I really don't want to haul the Grizz 2,000 miles for one ride.

hey fourlix. We have ridden the rubicon on our old quads which were yamaha warriors. If you have full skid plates you COULD do it, but would u want to, i dont think so, it will do more damage and u wont have any fun worrying about all the damage that could happen. There are TONS of forest trails up here in the sierra's that arent like the rubicon so i would say bring your quads. I have a raptor and a ds650, both are great fun. Also check out sand mountain which is about an hour from reno, maybe it will be a weekend jeff will be out there with his 760 too. Dont know when you plan to come out to ride but if u plan on riding the sierra's it better be after mid June because there will still be snow anytime before then. Keep in touch and maybe we can hook up and ride together. Sean

There's also a place called Moon Rocks, just north of Sparks. We were there last fall and it was awesome. It's the perfect environment for your DS. If you're looking for good chow while you're in Reno, check out the buffet at the Nugget (mmmmmm!).

I ran my old LT250 through years ago, alot a fun. But it really tore it up, ripped the rear skid right off and the bottom tubing on my frame flattened out pretty bad.I think the hardest part was trying to get around the Jeeps(not much room)I rode with a guy on a dirtbike,he had no problem getting around the Jeeps, but he did get stuck in a few snow drifts.
I wouldnt take my DS in there to far,I am much smarter now and have more respect for my toys.
Bring a hammer to pound the wheels back out!!
Sand Mtn is not that far from Reno(a better choice for the DS)
Jeff

Messing around with Trip-Planner, not going to the Rubicon will save about a thousand miles driving. That's 2,500 miles instead of 1,500 miles. Since we will probably have only about 10 days, that's just too much driving and not enough riding. So we are going to can the Rubicon, and maybe swing through Vegas and get our tranny done anyway. If we plan on doing it, the tranny will be fine, if we don't, we'll end up there anyway. Maybe we'll fly up to Reno to see my Bud while the tranny is getting fixed in Vegas. Between the Paiute Trail and The Pink Coral Dunes, plus a little sightseeing along the way, plus finally meeting 3TV and Knutz, it will be a great trip. June.
