Recently when I went to the dunes I was running 17-40 gearing. I dd some 300ft runs and faired well. I was wondering is that too high gearing for the sand? Should I have ran 16t or 15t? All the mods listed except for the NOS. What have you guys found to be the best gearing for sand drags at 300ft?

To tell you the truth, when I was at Dumont, I thought my new 17-40 gearing with the 20" paddles were going to be great....until... I found that I was having a couple problems. 1. In the sand, it was creating stress on the clutch and was slipping alot 2. It took so long to reach the benefit of taller gearing, I would have needed about 2x the hill to compete. After talking to Sand45, he recommended that I change back to my stock cntrshaft....luckily, I had it, changed and went back to the hill. What a difference, I could at least look the rest of the DS owners in the eye...and I actually beat a few of the less modd-ed bikes (small victory, but I'll take what I can get )!! I guess that it has to do with the type of riding/racing you want...for the short, steep Dumont hill, I needed short gears with a lot of bottom end. For the longer, lower sloped dunes in Glamis, I'm not sure, and for racing out at El Mirage dry lakebed, the taller gearing could wind out in 5th and cruise, but it would take a while. Anyway, that's just my (longwinded) opinion and I'm stickin to it.
