If you pull yours out and get the exact dimensions, I'm sure htey can be purchased elsewere. We have a bearing place in town that has every bearing you can imagine. I don't have the part # on hand at the moment and don't know the exact size to get it some were else. If you had asked last week, I had a bike apart and could have checked for you.

Steering Stem Bearing Update.

6203 Part number on the bearing. The metal bearing retainer on the shaft bent up and causing the stem to move a half inch.

NewDSLover,
Is the bearing still good?
Its hard to believe you could have ruined it,I could see the 2 piece retainers getting bent the could be a little stronger.
The 2002 DS's have big (BIG)washer at the bottom to stop the shaft from possibly pulling up,maybe you could add one.

Jeff~
I know, I thought the same thing. The number on the bearing is cs203Lu, mfg is NTN. The bottom seal on the bearing it toast. The rollers catch and don't feel so good. The metal retainer is bent and the bearing can move around in their pretty freely. As for the washer, theirs a big washer on the bottom side thats concaved shaped. Before I removed these parts I removed the pin and tighten this up as far as it would go. It bottomed out and still have a 1/4" play in it. Go figure. I went to ntn.co.jp (the mfg of the bearing) and did some research on this. I'm thinking it not a bearing failure but a retainer failure that caused the bearing to fail.

Question: Does anyone make a stonger retainer for this? Is the Baja DS in the same specs but made from a stronger metal?

Newdslover,
That bearing assy is just a cheap machinery bearing, used mostly on slow turning rollers and such. There will be some play in the bearing because they are not precision machined. If you take it to a bearing specialty house, they can match it up and maybe come up with a stronger version.

When you remove it, inspect the clearences to see if you can substitute it for one that may have slightly different specs. For instance, if the flange holes are a certain distance apart you may be able to use one slightly different to get one that is heavier duty, then alter the holes.
Let us know what you come up with, many of us may want to upgrade. I know I do because mine is also bent.

JSsDS~
Here is what I've found. The bearing is the same as a 6203LU, this are used in Alternators(GM, Chevy, etc.) My uncle owns a Starter & Alt. repair shop. The differences between the two is that the DS bearing is shaved on both sides to fit into the housing w/o coming out. I'm going to use the standard bearing and make my own housing. I have some stock alum. that should work, I'll just need to bore out the inside for the bearing. Then bore a hole for the stem, and drill two holes for the bolts. I'll need to make an upper and lower but shouldn't be to hard. I'll let you know how it works and if it breaks after the first hard endo. I think this is something BEARMAN1 could offer in his product line. What do you think bearman1?

Sounds good but a I have some concern about the use of aluminum for the flange. There is alot riding on the streingth of it. Mine is already bent.
