What do you want to improve on your machine? Power? Handling? Suspension? What kind of terrain do you ride on? New tires are one of the best mods on your stock bike. Many guys like the Ohtsu tires that come on the 400ex or Baja DS650. If you want to improve handling, the new tires and different offset rims from Bombardier are a great choice. Aftermarket upper A-arms also help with the handling. If power and speed is your ultimate goal, save a few hundred more bucks to buy a 703 kit from Knutz. For a cheaper power option, a full exhaust, clamp on K&N air filter, and CDI box is a great combination. Those 3 things will run you about $750 to $800. You have many options and hopefully others will expand on what I have already said.

If you go to the dunes a lot:
Aftermarket air filter (K&N) with jet kit ($120) and a pipe ($200 slip-on to $500 Full), Tach $200)and CDI ($300). Diamond G heel guards ($190) more clearance if jumping with the paddle tires. Baja light kit ($???) for night riding and a Cascade flag holder ($30) (James Lucky Products / JL Enterprises).
That should total out at about $1800. After you do this and come up with another $2k you can do the 703 kit by Knutz / Pami.

If you prefer handling over power, a set a works shocks for 450.00 (620.00 w/rezzies) makes a big difference and is the most economical high perf shocks. Set up the rear shock for free. Then add a pipe, filter w/outerware directly to carb, CDI w/o rev limiter, jet the carb properly and you should be happy for a while. The rest of the money can be used to customize to your specific riding needs such as tires, gearing and maybe handle bars.

Jimbo, I can understand your dilema. I am looking for the next power step also.
I have a big gun race exhaust, ron wood cdi, carb mount K&N and the dynojet jet kit. These all were done close to each other and made a noticable increase in power. Especially bottom end power.
Now, I am looking to get more power. I would do the 703, except my riding season is just starting and it takes about 2 months down time. So, I am waiting on that and thinking about piston cams and a carb upgrade. I will keep everyone updated on my mods soon.
If I were you, I would do exhaust, carb mount filter and a cdi. That will give a nice power increase and keep the cost low. Then look at cams, piston and carb.

Here is the order that I would spend the money-
$495- Big Gun Race series pipe
$290- Team Pami ignition box
$ 60- K&N air filter mounted directly on the carb
$430- Team Pami sport cams
$200- Team Pami valve springs
$300- Team Pami 11.2:1 compresion piston
$ 50- head and base gaskets
$1725-Total
This assumes that you do the assembly yourself
The last step would be $350 for a Mikuni flat slide carb, as soon as you can afford it.
Cheaper components can be found, but these are reliable parts that have proven themselves.
