I can't decide what to do next I have a 2001 ds alba pipe, k&n on the carb, 172.5 main jet, pep stablizer, 17 tooth sprocket, 22in holshot xtc, I want to go faster what will give me more performance, a cdi box or a 44mm carb?

Well if you get the carb then I think it will make you hit the rev limiter faster then you gonna wish you had the cdi too.

Big discussion on this went down a week ago, can't remember the topic name.
The resident DS dyno expert is Knutz - I think his dyno testing showed that going to a 45mm carb from the 42 on a stock motor reduces low end power, with minimal top end gains. With your tires and gearing, your holeshot is already suffering, so I wouldn't want ot lose any more bottom end.

No reason for the bigger carb until cams and piston are messed with.
Knutz said if you don't do piston/cams/valve springs at the same time, then the most significant increase from choosing one will be from the cams/springs. Then do piston later. After this, get the TM45 carb to replace the BSR42 to take full advantage of your motor mods.
If piston/cams/valve springs are considered, also consider all the bore and stroke jobs available - its all a matter of money.

There's also turbo, EFI, and NOS...

You'll want the CDI box no matter what you do though, there are 4 sources I know of : RWR, Pami, Alba, and Graydon. All but Graydon have no rev limiter at all, Graydon limiter kicks out at 9300.

Good Question.........

When my bike was stock, I never noticed the rev limiter. Then I added the pipe and jet kit and started bouncing off of it. So, then I added the cdi. I am now looking at the next step, which is to go inside.

I am debating a 703 kit with cams, or doing a piston, cams, valve springs and a carb. I think one of these is the next step, or you could go to a 760. It really depends on how much you want to spend.

As for carb or cdi, I am not sure. I think like Hurycne said if you get one you will want the other too. You really have to look at the whole package and put it together like that.

Bat -
Since you have a RWR CDI, and I wanna get one, I have a question for you - Does the lack of rev limiter bother you at all. Like if you miss a gear in a drag or something how high does it accidentally rev before you can get off the throttle. I've heard no complaints from anybody about this, but I wanted to ask the question to somebody before I go ahead and buy it.

Thanks

This is when I would say the Edelbrock QwikSilver carb it will add about 4 more HP in the mid range and about one more on top. But there was not enough interest in it so they did not go any further with it

Hightower, do a search on "Recommend best slip-on Muffler and CDI Box" and read Knut'z replies to similar questions. I have had my cdi for a few months and occasionally miss a shift, no problems! I don't have a tach or heavy duty valve springs. Get one! Gives you more when you need it.

The lack of rev limiter does not bother me. I do on occasion miss a shift and I don't really know how high it revs. It is hard to watch the tach and race at the same time. I have never blew it up, so I guess I am ok.

I think the highest it has gone is about 8500rpm. I usually try to shift it at about the 8000 mark. That keeps it in the meat of the powerband and it pulls real good up to that mark. The natural reflex to let off the throttle when I miss a shift is pretty good I think.

I was worried at first, but after having the cdi, I can say that it does not bother me.

It is much better than bouncing off the rev limiter that is for sure.

Dont even sweat the Rev limiter being eliminated. Your DS will only rev so high anyway. If you have it jetted right you wont harm the motor even if you rev it to the moon. When I am tuning it and doing plug readings, I will take it out and do a slow, then mid, and high rpm rides and read all three. When I do the high Rpm, it is flat out screaming and I have had no problems. Once all of the big mods are done that might be a different story because of the machine still making the HP at high RPM. When I add the NOS I will be much more careful along with adding a Tach to be safe.
