first DS mods.......

I`m asking for my cousin, he has a black 01 DS. Our 2 best friends have Raptors. so far the DS is keeping ahead, even tho the Raptors have piped and jetted. DS is stock, what are the easy little things to do before starting to spend alot. I know biggerisbetter is one person making an end cap and would like to get ahold of him. Any ideas? Email me if you make an end cap, he would like to buy one. Seems to me the rev limiter comes on way too soon. Maybe the rear traction could help too.Thanks.

A modified end cap is a great way to go. It can be kept quiet, and still have a significant boost in low and mid-range or opened up for even more.
Plan on rejetting, but Mikuni jets work just fine, for a lot less dough than the Dynojet Kit. I didn't like the Dynojet needle anyway, it made hot spots, the Mikuni needle makes smoother power.
.....A K&N air filter, and removing the airbox lid, is also a quick couple of ponies, rejetting is also needed. An Outerwears, like the one on the stock paper filter, helps keep things clean.
....The CDI is the first place you need to spend some dough. Team Pami CDI was about $289 I think. I just got a used tach to go with it. For that much dough the CDI should come with a tach.
....22" rear tires really hook up on the DS. XCT's, Razrs, or Bandits.
But you better change the fronts to 23" or it will mess up the caster in the front steering geometry, only really fixed by A-arms, like TimmyBoy uppers, about $289, I think. Cheapest fix is the Ohtsu 20" with 23" front tires, like the Baja. The full set of +1,+1 A-arms will leverage the front shocks, making them much more acceptable. The stock shock's biggest problem is too much rebound dampening, making them pack up on repeated hits.
.....Works steelers, $359, triple rate shocks are a huge improvement over stock. With an average weight guy, 170 to 225 lb, the 210# mainsprings with 240lb, 2.8" helpers with 500# helpers work fantastic, improve ride, and can still handle big jumps. You can add rezzies later for $160 plus a service fee of $60, or do it yourself if you can find someone locally to recharge the shocks with 250 psi of Nitrogen.
.....This way he can beat those Raptors in the whoops, turns and jumps as well as the straights.

1. exhaust- big gun, ct, ron wood, yoshi slip on
2. air filter- carb mount k&n gets the most hp gain
3. cdi- ron wood or knutz/pami
4. dynojet jet kit- this is fourth, because you could probably do just as good with factory jets, just buy an assortment and go try it out until it is dialed in.
Those mods will really wake up the ds and give the raptors something to shoot for. Also, tires will help. I forgot to put those on the list.

Oh, yeah. Get some Allen head cap screws for the float bowl. You will trash the phillips head screws getting them out. With allen head screws in the float bowl, rejetting takes less than 5 minutes. Those Raptors can rejet in 1 hour if they are expert at it, and first rejet could take them 3 hours.

I agree with foulix, do a search and you can find the sizes needed for the float bowl. I also put them in the top cover, I stripped them out to.
ohio250lover, the raptor is a pain to jet, but I can do it in about 20-30 minutes now. I have played with it a lot. It has two carbs and you have to remove a lot of the plastic in front to do it.

Hey Ohio, its' nice to see you taking care of that vintage machine.
Does it qualify for "Horseless Carriage" license plates yet?
Do you ride it in parades on Veteran's Day and stuff like that?
Do you let your monkey ride it in the parades?
Does it keep up with the little Shriner's go-karts?
.....And for future reference, This is the Bombardier forum, not Yamaha. SO when you say
<< why does it take you an hour to rejet a raptor? >>
please be advised that it takes 3 minutes to rejet a DS.
