Lidless?
#1
Masters of Mayhem,
I was at the little sahara in oklahoma a couple weeks ago and in preperation for going I decided to remove my lid and also remove and plug the snorkel ports...and I raised my needle all the way. (note: Dynojet kit was ordered but didn't come in on time...got a call from the shop after making it all the way to Enid! sun-of-a...) Well, we survived the entire anthology, "Rock of the 80's", set up camp, paid fees, and off to the dunes we rode. Man, for a second I thought I'd died and gone to heaven...but, the DS was running bad--especially once I opened her up a little. I stayed focused as possible...remembering best I could lessons learned from my friends at ATVConnection...I went back to camp, pulled my plugs, and no doubt they were black. I lowered the needle back to stock, changed plugs, and went back out...no change--not enough to notice anyway. It was still choking and stumbling...my neighbor, being just a bit more relaxed than me at this point, decided to remove the seat and take it for a ride. Apparently the seat was vaccuming to my lidless airbox and since I plugged my snorkel holes it was getting next to no air. I don't know much about rocket science, but this 'angle of the dangle' thing I really want to comprehend...what are you guys doing beyond going lidless? Are you guys modifying the lip on the airbox or removing the seal or what? Thanks for your time...I'm so not worthy...speechless...jim

I kinda like the idea of still having the airbox, something about bad past personal experiences keeps me there. If you want more air, you can get the small 1" air box vents sold at any MX shop. Get a 1" hole saw, drill as many 1" holes in your air box as you want or wherever you want, then pop in the vents. That should open up the air, also the air going into the box via those vents is already slightly filtered so thats a good thing. I haven't added these to my DS yet, but I added them to my last machine (LT250R.)
AngryBajaBoy,
Your just down in Reseda eh? What shop did you pick up your Baja at? North Hollywood Honda? (NoHoHo)

I picked it up at Hahm Motorsports down in Orange. They gave me a smokin deal! I went to North Hollywood because of a friend of mine is buddies with the owner. He told me they would cut me a great deal because of all the references that he sends in to them. Well after about an hour wasting my precious time there,I couldn't take it anymore! So I called Hahm by chance and they are the Biggest Bombardier dealers on the west coast. Man you should see how many DS's they had there in the back storage room. They had about 20 of them all assembled and ready to go, 5 different ones on the showroom floor, and about another 30 of them in crates in the back! Anyway they sold it to me for $500.00 less than N. Hollywood would sell me one for, and they even threw in a 4yr warranty! Nobody that I contacted could even come close to that deal. Hey, didn't you used to work over there at N. Hollywood? were do you go riding at? Gorman? Sand Canyon? I think I am heading up to Gorman tommorow late afternoon I have to try out some new jetting on my 45mm. Maybe we will have to hook up sometime. Take care. T.M.

I'm lid free, with the snorkels removed, holes plugged, and seal removed from top of lid. I cannot run without the airbox or my filter would get splashed with muddy water everywhere I go. If all I rode was sand, I'd go carb mount filter, but I ride woods too - just as much - so I can't lose the airbox. No swamps, just typical woods. The power increase from lidless to carb mount is minimal in my opinion, going by feel with no Dyno chart to prove, but both are a nice gain over stock set-up.
My seat is a whole inch from the top of the airbox, don't know why your seat was causing problems. There are rubber pads under the seat, between it and the frame - make sure these aren't missing??
I run 195 Dyno main, 4th groove on Dyno needle, plugs are a perfect golden tan - absolutely no black. When I was all Mikuni, I ran bottom groove, 180 main.

Running with no lid makes the snorkels useless - they can be removed for the simple, clean look of a streamlined induction system. They don't need removed, but I just like pulling the seat off and seeing nothing that has no function.
If the snorkels are removed, the holes in the front of the airbox need plugged to keep out splashes. The sides of the seat wrap the airbox well enough to keep the filter very clean, in spite of no lid, but those two big holes in front let a lot of crap in. You can get 1-1/4" PVC pipe caps at the hardware store that are the same diameter as the snorkel tubes, and clamp them in their place.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have to make sure the next time I'm home to see if I've got those pads you mentioned, C. I think I do, either side of the seatlatch post. And as far as all out just getting rid of the box...I know a bunch of guys doit, and it goes without saying that the filter is a pretty fragile, highly important item...everytime I get into the woods I get jousted by a root or fallen tree limb--you know, TRAILBLAZING...first time without the box and I'd get one through the lung...and maybe not notice till it too late....not dissin' the input, AngryBajaBoy...thanks just the same.
Hey Uglyman32--yea! a Q I can answer...that would be the crank case breather tube...there was a thread not too many days ago about that and what to do with it--as far as whether to put a filter on it or not, etc. I picked up a short stemmed chromed filter, that slipped into the end of that hose and a hose clamp to keep it secure. I noticed that mine had some pretty nasty residue that had attracted dirt...not good! I think the guys that are running high HP (jeffnrivercity, scooby...)are the ones most concerned about that as the engine then generates more crankcase 'breathing'. Betcha Hightower or one of the other techs can give some good info on this subject....out.
