Oil pressure gauge and sensor questions
#1
I am wanting to install a pressure gauge on my DS. If I unhook the oil pressure sensor, will the light still work if it starts to overheat? Also, what is the operating oil pressure psi suppose to be. My light was going wacky on me this weekend again, so I decided to get a check guage and see for myself if there was a problem. At idle I had about 45-50 psi and at 4000 rpm, I had between 75-80 psi. Does that sound right? I thought it was high.

02BAJA - the high temp light will still work if you disconnect the oil pressure switch - they are two seprate switches going to the same bulb. Just cap the wires off after you unhook them, so they don't accidentally short together and cause the light to come on for false reasons.
I'm at work, no shop manual here, but the pressures you posted sound pretty close to being right. When I get home in the morning I'll look it up for you and post again tomorrow.

I just put a oil pressure guage on because I couldn't rely on the oil pressure sensor anymore. At idle it was at 40psi when the engine was at operating temp. it was at 20. I could send you pics of how I mounted it if you want.

The shop manual specs are for when the engine is fully warmed to operating temp - it will make a big difference, as indicated by crashndurn.
Minimum pressure at idle - 7psi
Minimum pressure at 6000rpm - 44psi
Maximum oil pressure, at any rpm - 87psi
