All right I lost my owners manual so I dont know what kind or how much oil to put in? I live in Minnesota so I need an oil that is from like 30 degrees to 90 degrees, because I ride in the winter also! So what do you recommend?
Also is the 2001 ds oil filter the long one or the short one? because the 2000 and 01 are different.

ask for a 2001 oil filter. the 2001 oil filter is longer.

everyone has their favorite oil they use. 10W30, 10W40

stay away from 100% synthetic oil that is energy conserving with friction modifiers. You can use 100% synthetic oil but certain types will cause clutch slippage.

 

I have used Castrol GTX 10w-40. A lot of users on here use this oil, always worked good for me, I live in Texas, so it doesn't get too cold, but It stands up to the heat ok. Do a user search for Buttfungus, and go to his webpage, he has listed info on a lot of riders, including engine oil. Most people I think use The Castrol, or Honda HP4. but they both have the same results, and you can get the Castrol from walmart for $1.49 a quart, while the Honda you have to order, or get from a dealer, and is $7.00 a quart. That said a lot for me.

P.S: It holds 3.3 quarts, if I remember correctly.

If you put the longer oil filter on do you have to buy the cover to accomadate for it??? I also run Honda HP4 with no problems

 

It is 3.3 qts.

You need the longer cover for the 01 filter( I've changed mine).

I run Redline 20/50 (only cause I know the distributor, otherwise it's too expensive).

 

Well I guess I need that longer cover thanks for the info Vegas. I still havent put that carb on yet!! I suppose I need to address the tranny problem first though.
