Are you sure it is a 2001?? I didn't think the Baja was out for 2001? You might have gotten it then, but they are supposed to be 2002. Really all it has is just some little extras, but a big thing is the tachometer. I don't know if they did change anything with sprockets or gearing in the Baja, but when I drag against another DS that a friend rides, I pull on him in 5th gear, even still when he put the RWR CDI on?? Who knows????

The baja came out in 02.
The baja has more lights, stronger and better A-arms, tachometer, new foot pegs, new tires, new rims, hand guards, shock covers. So for the money I would go with the baja.
I know that in 2000 the front left shock broke on lots of ds's.
and on the 2000 and 01 the chain roller was supposed to be crap. (mine is not but some had problems)

With the exception of the rev limit being increased 200rpm for the baja, the performance is the same, nothing changed motor or gearing wise.
All the add-ons MXZ mentioned are well worth the money.
The a-arms are a misconception - they were changed for a more economical means of manufacture, but the geometry remains the same, and the better handling/steering of the baja is due to the better tires and different rim offset.
All chain rollers prior to '02 did not have bearings, so if the preload isn't set right and the chain spends a lot of time on the roller, it would fail in a matter of hours. now they all are bearinged.

I thought my baja was 2001 cause i bought it in dec 01,but any way I was riding at my local sandpit today and a guy shows up on a z-400 asking for a challange from the people there, I watched the Z beat a 400ex,banshee,mojave,warrior,250r
but he didnt ask a challange from a DS or raptor?
