Racing mods?
#1
What mods would you guys do for desert racing on the engine? If I put in a box I'll need better springs for the valves right?? I was also going to do some port polishing and stronger clutch springs. I need to run on pump gas and to be very dependable.
I'm also doing some drag racing but on that all I think that i need to do is be able to change the the gearing. and take of some of the armor.
Knutz got any ideas? I think I need to stay at 650cc if posible to retain durablity. Right now Im running dyno jet 190 and needle, K@N, and t-4 procircut and I'm doing pretty good winning races. I think that the guy that bet me had a box and was able to rev out more. I came in 5th out of about 20 so not bad for the first time on a 300'grass strip with a protree! so any suggestions would be great!!

The desert bike that I've put the most time into is running an 11.2:1 piston, sport cams, valve springs, clutch springs, mild port work, 45MM Mikuni carb, K&N in the box, and a Rev Box. Despite this motor getting "sugared", it was still running fine when I tore it donw last. I had to tear it down to fix a bent shift fork because the previous owner could not set up something as simple as a clutch lever.
This combination is perfectly safe and durable. It's also fast enough to embarass alot of other bikes. During the Nevada 1000, it rolled up on a Canondale on a fire road at about 10MPH, in fourth gear. The rider clicked fifth as he went by the Cannondale. [In the first 10 mile stretch [all fire road] he passed 6 bikes that had left at 30 second intervules ahead of him. [Unfortunatly, he crashed about 6 miles later.]
During this years Pont Du Vue race [sort of a long distance MX race], Team Pami 703's and 760's were entered. A 703 took 5th over all and 1st in four stroke. The 760's were running fine, but both broke swing arms. Personally, I think the 760 is the best motor to run in desert racing. It's got all the power you could need, it can make that power anywere in the power band that you want, and Team Pami's reliability mods make it more likely to live than a stock motor riden the same way.
Engine size doesn't mean loss of reliability. I personally don't think the 703 will be the best choice for a desert bike[due to the 1MM loss of cylinder wall thickness] but I still think it wil do fine. But if you want to stay 650cc's, you can still get a lot of power out of it. Follow the plan of our desert bike, and you should be rather happy.
