Duneme, its only an hour more to get to glamis than to get to dumont. Its worth the extra hour. 8 hours for you to get to dumont. 9 hours for you to get to glamis. Just make sure u have a radar detector for I5. We like going 75 with our trailer than just slow down when we get radar signals. That 55mph thing is BS. Only our way back from glamis last year it only took us 8 hours to get back, hehe. Think 80mph is too fast? I dont think so since the road is straight for 300 miles.

i have been to glamis for the last three years from dec 26 - jan 1st. christmas is always quiet and there are very few people at all until new years eve. you do want to make sure of where to camp before the new years crowd comes around. stay away from gecko rd if you have kids. the washes or gordons well are ideal.
as bill says comp at night is questionable, however last year they did set up a check point at comp which detered the rowdy crowd from showing up.
good luck.

look into camping in the washes. in some of the washes they have little burm tracks taht a perfect for teh little ones.. as well the washes edge the smaller dunes so you can take them for a little cruise. washes are great for family camping. teh camping is a littl more primitive though since theyre are no bathroom facilities

The washes would be mellow if you went down to wash 30+.
One place we camp on the Thanksgiving week is at Ogilby. It's very mellow! You have to ride through a couple miles of small dunes to get to the big stuff but on large weekends it's worth it.
New Years we will be around wash 16 or so.
Check out Ogilby! It's a large wash area with plenty of room.
Let me know if you need directions or a map.

Is there a rode out to the wash's or will I be driving on the sand to get out there?
Got any pictures?
