Rectifier out????
#1
I was at LS Saturday and my bike would run. It would start fine and then after a few seconds it would start POPPING and cutting out like it was running out of gas. I thought it was my float sicking, not letting the bowl fill up quick enough, there fore the POPPING and SPUTTERING.
After pulling my carb off(twice) and cleaning it, I found myself in the Quadzilla499, and Maniac650 camp,Well, REX inlightened me, By turning my lights on. LOL!
Anyway, when my lights were on, the motor ran fine, If you turned them off, it would start to POP,and CUT out again (BAD)! SO I was able to ride all day(thanx guys, I would have NEVER thought of that).
So........Why did this happen??? Did I do something wrong??? Is it my Rectifier????And were can I get a Rectifier, and or Battery?????(battery is dead)

Did it ruin your Battery??? My battery is dead and this is about the third time in a week. If my battery is bad, will it ruin the NEW Rectifier???? Was you symptoms the same as mine???
Thanks,

All the rectifier does is change the voltage from ac to dc or something like that
If the rectifier is not working it will not charge you battery therefor starting up the ds so many times will finally drain the batter again
charge the battery get a new rectifier and your done with that

a rectifier changes your ac voltage from your alternator to pulsating dc witch your battery smoothes out like a capacitor does in normal electronics. you can damage it by putting the battery cables on the wrong terminals or it could simply overheat and become damaged. One thing to concider also it could maybe a bad regulator. I would suggest checking the voltage at the battery with a digital multi meter. It should be between 12 and 13 volts with the engine off and probibly somewhare around 14.5 volts when turned on. that should sugest that the battery is being charged. I'm thinking if the regulator is bad or the recitfier is bad you shouldn't get any change or too much voltage when the engine is running.

Bigger, I didn't have the same symptoms as you. It didn't ruin my battery I just had to recharge it or else it wouldn't start up after a couple of hours of riding.

On the bom (and most everything else made in the last 10 years) the regulator and the rectifier are one in the same unit, black box with fins located under the air box. You may have a problem with it over charging and causing the CDI to cut out.
I'm not sure if this CDI has overvoltage protection but most do and its why it cuts off.
Sometimes if your battery is bad the voltage regulator will overcharge to compensate for what it sees as low voltage and it may be just fine
My suggestion is to charge your battery at 2 amps for about 6 hours then have it load tested at your local auto parts store. If its bad, replace it first. Then, using a voltmeter, check the voltage output with the engine running around 2000 RPMs. It should be ~14.8 volts max. If its higher and goes even higher with RPMs then your regulator has failed and needs to be replaced.
Always check a charging system with a good battery.
Hope this helps

This forum is un-real as far as info...
Kyle, I have the same prob you did. I was wondering why the He!! my bike would run fine when I hit the nos button.
I guess it was like when you turned on your lights, It drew enough power away to not overcharge the system??
Well, Ill just run my lights for the day. Seems this (rectifier) is why my bike keeps sputtering. Thanks fellas.
