Default Clutch Problems

I went to Dumont today and had a great time. Was doing very well and holding my own and then some. Except for a DS on nos and a 690 raptor I was up front almost every time. There was another raptor there as well that every once in a while would pull on me at the very top.
Any way my clutch went out. I wasn't on the bike when it happend my son was. But in order to get it back to the truck and onto the trailer I had to adjust the clutch cable all the way in at the lever on the bars. Even then it slipped real bad. I know that when I drag a lot it gets to the point where I can not speed shift or it will slip eveytime.
Should I go with the kit Alba sells or is there a better option? Are there any little tricks I should know before I do the R&R on the clutch?
Hey Tony missed ya out there. There was a stage 2 ds out there with dual 39's. I was able to beat him as well. But in his defense he was running way lean according to what he said.

TIA guys for any info on the clutch

You have to have more done to it than just the basic's.....Do you have cams and piston as well? Sounds like you had a great outing. It is always fun to go out and be ahead in the races.

Hey Larry, just a one day gig I guess, Heh! Sorry to hear about the clutch, it sounds like that Carb must have performed well for you. How did you like it? I am not sure about clutch kits, but call Gary at TVI he has the good springs and I am sure he has a good clutch for it also. Tell him I sent you and he should cut you a good deal. Are you going to make it out to Glamis next week?

Eagle,
Sorry to hear about the clutch. I had a similar problem after I put the full RWR exhaust on.....it was always slipping trying to pull comp or any of the big hills at Dumont. I ended up replacing the clutch springs (RWR) and it was an amazing difference...no slipping, just pulling. It sounds like you may have some other problems than just the springs, but hopefully nothing that will keep you down too long. On a side note: When I replaced the springs, it was the first time I had ever had an engine or piece of an engine apart, so was very nervous if I'd remember everything. To help this, I took pictues and wrote down everything I did so that I coud refer if I got into a jam later. Turned out very simple, but I saved the presentation just in case.....you probably don't need it, but if you've never been into that part of the engine, here's my trip through "Clutch Lane":

Larry get the springs TVI has, they are better than the Pami and RWR springs. And I don't say that because I know Gary and I am tying to help him. It is just over the last 6 months I have been watching the post on clutch springs and the ones that Gary sells seem to be the most popular bang for the buck. I think Dycorp in Anaheim sells Bartlett clutches and RWR sell Discs also.

NeoSirfir, very cool tips and pics. Thanks

DemonDS, Not yet. But Piston and Cams are next. Just as soon as the piggy bank gets way fatter.

BillDS650, I think plates are a must as well. The last time i changed the oil. There was small flakes on the drain plug magnut. And like i was saying. It was slipping after repeated drags. So im sure they are worn baddly.

Tony, Yea it was a blast. Just was up for the day. And that got cut short cause of my clutch. As far as next weekend. We are headed for an area just North of Ocateawells. Don't think that is the correct spelling. we do some desert ridding and in some of the washes there. It's Family thing. We will be at this same place for turkey day also. We plan on a day trip to Glamis that weekend as well as we are only about 40 mins or so farther to Glamis.

Thanks for all the info on the clutch i'll get hold of everyone and see who can get it to me before next weekend and with time for the R&R.

NeoSirfir,
I just finished reading through your NeoSirfir's Clutch Spring Replacement SIte Very cool dude. and it's 89 in-lbs incase you want to update that. I checked in my manual for you. (and me) If atvconnection puts up a tips section for the DS this would certainly qualify.

Eagle,
Thanks for the update and glad you enjoyed it... I've made the change for future wrench heads. I've been looking for a shop manual for the 00 DS...where did you get yours? I've also heard that there's a CD-ROM version out there somewhere...that'd be even better. Anyone have any ideas?

Dang Neosirfir, thats one heck of a presentation on the clutch repair. You get an A for effort. Time well spent to help others for sure.

As for you Eagle man. Better get that big yellow bus back together so you can realy see just how much that new carb has helped you out.

Doesn't seem right does it. I get my quad together and yours comes apart. I'll get another Hotcam and get it working right one of these days and we can see how that pans out against your carbed bike. For now, you'll just have to beat up on my regular bolt ons.
