Rudy is very lucky to be alive...kudos to the EMTs & hospital staff. Two punctured lungs not properly treated can kill you in 30 minutes. I seen it happen at Dumont last year. The guy was awake complaining that it was hard to breathe after an accident in a buggy and 30 mins later he was covered with the yellow sheet. Flight for life took 45 mins to arive. it was not the driver of teh buggies fault!!... it was just a bad combination of things. the point where rudy and the others staged to race WAS the starting point about 30 minutes earlier. however with teh increase in spectators,the starting line naturally moved down teh strip another 1/4 mile. so you had teh buggy hauling *** coming down teh strip and a set of banshes lined up to start a race in front of him. bad combination. it shoudl also be noted that the strip at this point was not a straight line.. but rather a sweeping right hand turn.
