Larry that sucks! Make sure what ever you do get a magnet in there!!!! But 30 ft. lbs sounds a little high to me!! More like 15 ft lbs. or 20. Your head bolts are only at 24ft lbs. and they have to hold a lot more pressure.

 

I usually just disconnect the oil hose off of the 90° fitting on the motor to drain the oil. Me dealer told me to when I bought it. So far, so good.

 

I think I'm going to drill my plug for a safety wire hole. Then I don't have to worry too much about it backing out if I don't tighten it enough. I'm worried about stripping mine after hearing of you guys.

 

Hey Andrew I think your dealer want some major engine repair money from you! Their is over a quart and a half sitting in the bottom of your motor and all the metal debris sits down there. You need to drain it at the plug and the hose or you will fry your motor a lot sooner than you think.

I just realized you guys are talking about the engine drain plug! I thought it was the oil tank plug you were discussing. My bad....

I do look at the oil tank filter though. Always clean.....

 

Your right Tony...I have since learned that there is no need for that much torque. I have been using 15lbs for the last few oil changes or so. On my last change my heali coil that I installed came out with the drain plug.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif[/img] So I had to use a 20mm drain plug ( no magnut) for our last weekend trip to Dumont. Im gonna check out the link that Al posted and see if the have a 20mm with a magnut. If not that i'll drill the one I fave and install a magnut myself. Cause I definetly want one.

 

yeah i'm having a problem with my Honda Foreman oil drain plug being stripped out ,Called the honda of rarden said it would cost about $50-$150 to tap and rehtread, he said $50 dollars for an hours labor plus price of parts,anybody know the size of plug thats in a Honda Foreman.I plan on doing it myself,i apperciate any advice

 

Thanks for all your comments on this! To share with all of you what I ended up doing after this happened to me I thought I'd tell you what I did so I could save somebody time researching what to do. I was originally going to use a helicoil, but I found out that the tap would be too long (it has a pilot on it), so that would not work. I ended up going to Ace hardware and buying a 14m x 1.25 spark plug thread insert that was 3/8" long. I bought a 3/4-16 tap, no need for drilling because hole was already large enough. I then went to Napa and bought a 14mx1.25 oil drain plug with magnet on it part# BK704-1921. This all cost me about $30. I taped the hole, threaded the insert in with 271 locktite on it and it worked beautifully! I did stand the quad up to do this to make it easier to tap the hole out. Just make sure you clean out all of the shavings inside the case after tapping the hole. I hope this info saves people a lot of time and hassle! Ride on!
