Fine tuning the DS?
#1
Ok, I have had my DS for about a year. I have a WB E-Series slip on, carb mount filter and that is about it. I jetted it when I got my slip on, it was my first time really working on a atv. My question is, how do you "fine tune" your jetting? It seems to be really cold natured till it warms up. It backfires through the carb till it warms up. Has just a hint of a stumble when you stab the throttle. And it seems like it should hit the rev limiter when I get up in the gears. But it doesnt. It will not tap out all the way. What steps do I need to go through to maximize the mods I have done and will do in the future? TIA.

Now that I've put on my exhaust and carb mount filter and jetted it, it is also really cold natured. I have the same problem of backfiring through the carb til it warms up. Mine needs a little 'fine tuning' also, I just wish I knew where to start.

if you do a search in the forum im sure you'll find what your looking for, i think its a lean problem, for the stumble when you hit the throttle you'll need to move the needle clip to get it richer, i believe you move it down, im not sure about the cold natured it might the pilot jet is to lean also, i would most definitely get a second on this, im not much into the carb setup, i just keep tring till i found what worked, and read what others had said on here

I had the same problem...until recently...I went to ALBA...I knew I was rich at start up even after all the popping and touchiness and pushing in the choke because I could see it in my exhaust...rich black exhaust all over my grab bar and in the end of my pipe...the stock pilot jet is a 40...alba's research and fine tuning with dyno on a DS (with full pipe and filter) resulted in them using a 47.5 pilot--bigger number equates to more air on the pilot jet.
BTW--I didn't get this info over the phone...I already had'em in my pocket for a few hundred bucks so they were real friendly and helpful while I was standing there...the woman that took my cash tho had the personality of a fence post

Baja dudes,
You guys are both lean. Best advice I can give is to buy the Dynajet kit. It has all the instructions you will need. Otherwise go with a 175 main jet, put your clip in the 4th groove down from the top and turn the air screw 3 to 3-1/2 turns out. With your setup this should make it run ****

No sweat there JSsDS...I think their problem is at start up not at the upper ranges of the fuel circuit once the quads are warmed up...in which case going to a larger main and moving the needle clip won't do them any good...I believe the problem is with the pilot jet being too rich...IMO.
This morning I was thinking of this thread and how I used to have to really be patient with my quad on warm up...it would throw fits if I tried to give it even a little gas when the choke was out...I'd have to pull the choke two clicks out letter warm up a minute or so and then push it in one click wait a moment and then well...you get the picture. So this morning after I rolled her out of my van--it was a little frosty here in the High Desert/Mojave--I thought I'd test my new jetting just to make sure I hadn't succumbed to the placebo effect of spending such a small amount of money to help her run/start better...I garuntee you that my quad has never started without the choke initially. Today it did...without hardly a complaint even.
Granted, I know that usually a choke richens the low circuits for start-up--right?--so I can't exactly explain why changing the pilot changed my start-up proceedure. And actually the main reason I went with the 47.5 is because of all the rich black exhause from idle to 1/4 throttle...
So the bottom line is if your running a slip-on and a filter definately consider going with the DJ kit as JSsDS said but also do yourself a favor and spend five bucks on the pilot jet too...I believe you'll be glad you did
