Default 87 octane?

Anyone run regular 87 octane pump gas in their ds650? Friend of mine has a 50 gal. tank on his truck that he uses to fuel his prairie 650 and airplane. Was wondering if I could use 87 octane in my brand new stock ds....btw it is still in the break in period. thanks for any input

I wouldn't use it. They do recommend I think at least 92+octane. Why not just spend the extra $.20 a gallon and be safe?? I'm sure it would run, but mabye not like it is suppposed to. As they always say....It's better to be safe, than sorry! JMHO

I ran 87 once..........your bike will not tolerate 87 very well. It will cough, spit , sputter and miss. Be good to your bike and run around 90-92

The octane rating is the fuels resistance to burning from heat I believe. If you run too low of an octane, your gas will burn before the spark. This condition is known as pre-ignition, pinging, pre-detonation and a half of a dozen other names. Someone else who REALLY knows can tell you what the risks are, however I know it isn't a good thing. I can see why you would want to run the 87, however I would suggest the 91+ as recomended by the mfr. If you really want to use some of that 87 though, you could mix in a gallon or so of race gas to boost the octane level a little. I'm not sure if that really works but it sounds like a good idea.

I had an older car with 160k miles on it that was starting to ping due to carbon build up on the pistons, I had to run 91 octane otherwise it was even more gutless & just finicky than it started out.
