PACKING OR NO PACKING
#2
The way I've always understood it, the packing helps guide the exhaust smoothly through the muffler while acting as a sound muffler. Without it, the exhaust can swirl inside the open areas of the pipe and cause more back pressure. This info goes way back but i beleive it to be true today.
With the ever tightening noise restrictions, why would you want to make it louder anyway?

As JSsDS said. It is there for noise reduction. However with out it you will lose some power due to the turbulance and that will decrease the air flow through the pipe. You need the packing or at least something wrapped around the inner screen.

It has nothing to do with air flow per say. It has an effect on the wave as its going through the pipe. When your running an unpacked pipe your creating vibrations in the pipe that it wasnt designed for. The pipe was designed for packing and it needs to be ran.

the woods pipe would run better with the packing. unless changes are made to the pipe that allows it to work better without it. with out packing the power will be farther up into the RPMS.
we should have a new exhaust for our bikes in about 2 weeks. we should be able to get good(great) gains from this new pipe. it will be dynoed tuned for the RPM that we like to keep out bike in.

Is that going to be a DSMike & Steve special pipe? Is this something like a custom deal or a production type of pipe? Good luck with it either way, the more fast DSs on the sand the better.

it will be as custom as a pipe can get. full exhaust in frame pipe. more than likely will not be on another bike besides ours.
i'll be lucky to get my own, dad is buddies with the guy and he booked up right now.
