Hey BIGBAJA, is your homemade snorkel the same length as the stock tube? If Bombardier did their homework, the stocker could have been the correct tuned intake length, so if you changed it, that might throw it off a little. Maybe the K&N is just closer to a tuned length?? (just a theory)

based on your experiment and some of my own, the 15" long intake tube is probably the problem, even though the diameter is not small.

the intake track from valve seat to air filter can be "tuned" for a particular RPM by the length and bore diameter. in general, longer length and smaller diameter will help low RPMs, shorter length and wider diameter will help upper RPMs.

i found that any length farther than around the rear shock bolt was too far for top end power.

tappering the intake track (narrow at valve, wide at filter) can increase flow dramatically.

on my turbo, i have a 4X cylinder volume 3D tappered plenum above the rear shock bolt that feeds into a 3" diameter pipe to my throttle body.

I think it is safe to say that Scooby didn't do his homework on this subject; he wrote a new chapter in the book.

From Scooby's explaination, it makes perfect sense why people who drag race would rather have the filter directly on the carburetor. Now if only someone could use this information to design a power producing intake that didn't have the problems of BigBaja's prototype or the common carburetor mounted K&N filter.

BIGBAJA, your R&D will pay off to you and other forum members, (like myself) great job.
