Default DS 650 gearing

I read the article in the new Dirt Wheels about the 04 lighter DS 650 and in the article it mentions the " Hot Set Up" for the DS 650 being a 17/38 sprocket combo, this came straight from the Bombardier engineers. Has anyone tried this, and if so how does it work???

Way to steep.. In fact most people go 15/42. It would have no bottom end.. but the top end would be fast if it could procude enough power to make it there..

The engineers say that the DS has plenty of power to pull this gearing, and the only reason it is geared the way it is stock is to keep it under 80 for the government regs. I'm not saying I agree with him just wanted to know if anybody has tried it.

Maybe on flat ground, paved roads. Not hills and sand washes.

I run a 17/40 combo with the tall ITP wheels and tires. It is perfect in all conditions!

You guys have fixed up quads. This article I'm sure was talking of stock quads.

Alot of people are going to 15/43 or 15/42 which makes a good dune gearing with 22 inch tires. With this gearing, first gear is prety much useless. Hill racing is done with a launch in second and shift to third. The stock quad on flat sand will pull pretty cleanly into fifth and then fizzle out at the top of fifth. A modded quad usually will pull more rpms so should'nt need taller gearing unless you've gained quite a bit of power. The 17/38 and stock tires should work ok in dirt or sand, instead of taking off in second gear you will leave in first. What terrain do you ride on? How fast do you need to go?
With tall gearing the RPM range between every shift will be greater, taking longer for your bike to recover between shifts. I do alot of racing and rarely see much over 50 mph so that is what I geared for.

I run 17/38 for desert racing the bomb pulls this gearing fine with just a slip- on pipe. When I take the DS to the dunes I run 15-40 with 22in haulers. The only problem is the DS will sit on the Rev limiter in 5th gear on fast rides with the 15/40.

i've been running a 14/40 with the magnum 23" haulers. this year i've got alot more hp 70 @rear wheel. don't get to go to the dunes that often so gearing needs to spot on when i get there. what gear do some of you run with 23" tire?
