I know this topic keeps coming up. But what did you do to fix the problem of your lights blowing out all the time, from aftermarket cdi box?

 

Which lights? My headlight has never blown, with stock or aftermarket cdi. Tail light is futile to replace though - and my opinion says its the bulb. Its a regular trailer bulb and its hard to keep those in the trailer too! i replaced the tailight bulb with an LED from Autozone for $7 - fits right in the tailight socket and will last forever. mine has about 80 hours of ride time on it so far, still tickin'.

I was looking at those yesterday but never found a clear (or white light) bulb. Did you use the red led instead?

Hightower I was referring to the headlight and taillights. My tail light lasted all of one ride after i added my cdi. My headlights lasted for awhile. What type of led did you buy and how hard is it to wire. Part numbers plz if you can remember.

 

The LED I use is a direct replacement for the 1157 bulb - it just fits right in the tailight socket. It has a base like an 1157 tailight, and quite a few LED's aranged in a circle in place of the bulb/filament. They appear white to look at, but light up a very bright RED and are quite visible through the red lense as well. They sell these at auto parts stores, not all but some. just look for an LED replacement for 1157 bulbs, sorry I don't know the brand or # - I just got it off the rack.

Only downfall is the LED's actually face to the right when installed because of the positioning of the socket inside the tailight assembly, so it looks a little odd, but functions well and serves its purpose so I figure an odd looking light is better than no light!

Here's an example and picture of what you're looking for - click to the link above, scroll down towards the middle and look for the LED cluster. other optins are available, but this was the easiest without wiring required. Mine cost $7.

 

what high tower said about the tail light go led or you will hate life because you will always be changing taillights, i've lost my head light a few times but it came frome getting water in the light assembly and then when i went riding the water would hit the hot bulb and that was that. it got in there at the car wash. i think my friend monted his tail light different and his doesn't pop the tail light bulb any more. he hung it off a piece of rubber.

 

Has anyone tried mounting a different aftermarket headlight? It would seem that if you could match one to mount up, or easily rig up some mounting, you could possibly save some cash as well as try to shave some weight.

Yah...those were the ones I saw at the autoparts store. I wasn't sure how well they would show through a red lens and didn't want to waste my money on something that wouldn't work. Glad to hear they will thanks for the info.
BTW they are in the custom tail light section at Autozone, they are for those custom lights with clear lenzes.
