Default 14/40 vs 15/42

Working on some gearing changes, and I was wondering which would be the better way to go. I already am running a 15 tooth front, and I will be going to 22 haulers. Would I be better to go with the 42 tooth rear or can I achieve almost the same thing going with the 14 counter?

I have looked at the gearing calcs and it's almost the same thing. Any ideas?

I think that I can use the stock chain in either set up - I think.

The only reason I can think to go with the 42 rear is to take back the slack that I put in with the 15 counter.

i think they are the same, the only reason i can think of to go with the 42 is to add the ability to move on the front say 14 -42 or 15-42 , the aluminum sprockets don't last long in the sand. you can use the stock chain on those set-ups.

stay with a big front sprocket the tighter you turn the chian the more you lose.

My 42t aluminum only lasted 2 1/2 months, I am switching to the 14/40 combo(steel)

obviously you can spend a great deal of money on some of the new alloys. Sidewinder makes a new titanium rear for like $170. I REALLY don't want to put that much into a sprocket. I was wondering about the aluminum or even Sidewinders "Aero Space" Alloy. Which they say is WAY more harder than aluminum.

on the gear calcs the 14/40 is different than the 15/42. The 15/42 has a 68.56 4th gear at 8500rmp and the 14/40 has a 67.18 4th at the same rpm. This, of course is w/22in diameter shoes.

I agree with Sandman about the adjustability, but I also agree with Racer in that the smaller the front, the more of a pull on adjustment hense the less adjustability over time on the chain.

Hightower, Angry, Az got any suggestions?

bigdaddy i run the 15 front and change the back, you might try one of the aluminum first to see what you really like, i'm one that thinks the front sprocket has a affect on power, but since i have two ds's to compare with i'm going to try a 14-43, the hills at our dunes are really steep right now, and when they are really wet from a storm they suck the power out of a machine. raptors run as small as a 12 front sprocket and according to some there is enough room on the ds front to turn the 14 radius wise. the front sprockets are cheap at rocky mountain and that way you could buy the 14-15-17 and try them and then find what you like, then buy the good ones, and have the set-up that works for you. i think i'm looking for the gearing of 15-42 with 20" tires but i want to run my 22".
