if you have to hold you'r hand over the mouth of the carb to get it started you need to check valve clearance.

the manual says .10-.15mm or .004-.006 in. you need to have the piston locked at top dead center. there is a locking bolt on the bottom left of the engine case. do a search and you will find a lot of info on this subject.

Did you recently improve flow? (New pipe, air filter, etc.) This will let more air in at the low end as well at the high end. I have noticed a big difference in Pilot size when I change something. I had recently checked my valve clearances and all was good.

Are you running the stock carb or the TM45?

If you have the TM45 a 40 pilot is probably needed.

Also, check your air mixture screw.

If however, you have never checked your valve clearances on your DS. . . it is probably that.
