Default 10 Hour service.....

I guess im going to attempt to do the 10 hour service myself...the service center is closed on weekends, and i live to far away to get it done during the week. I just did a search and could not find a topic with this in it....(but then again, i am still forum illiterate.

Do i need to change the oil filter on this first service, and if so where can i get one other then at the dealer? I did a search on the oil, and it seems like valvoline 10w-40 with wet clutch protection? the one for motorcycle's right?.

During this service should i check for anything else? Keep in mind that I am very much atv illiterate and could use explicite detail.

Thanks all

changing the filter is recamended but if you must you can wash it off and check for metal. you should also check valve ajustment. as far as oil any thing that does not have antifriction additives is ok.

i thought the valve check was for the 25 hour service? hmm, dunno bout checkin dem valves...6800 for a bike is too much for me to worry about spending a hundred for someone who knows what they're doing.

I had a shop do my valve adjustment, than I did the rest(oil change, chain adjustment, lube all the grease fitting, ect). It's not worth messing it up if you are not sure how to do it.

By the way, it only cost me $50 for the valve adjustment.

The manual for the DS says check the valves after 10 hours and after 100 hours. I had my dealer change the oil and adjust the valves (they flooded my ds hardcore trying to start it so they gave me two free plugs, tards!) for $100 after i put 10 hrs on it. I gotta drive an hour and a half back there to have em check out my fan while its still under warranty, its been giving me troubles.

Changing oil and filter is all you need to do. If your valves need setting you will here them ticking. It was a year before my needed to be adjusted.

yeah the dealer told me when i picked it up to bring it in for a 10 hour oil change, and then a 100 hour valve check. I believe they said they would just check out the mounts and change the oil. I WILL have the shop do the 100 hour service on the beast, and then i will start modding. I read that the stock valves are good up to 9500 rpm? and some aftermarket are good up to a little more than that if i read it right. So i figure why not change them out when they do the service on them? that way i can put the vortech cdi on it and not worry about floating them.

Sound good so far? Hell you guys are my masters...he he he, im still just a grasshoppa

I strongly advise checking the valves - from what I can tell the exhaust valves don't seem to move much (even after 100 hours) however they intake valves are a little tight and get a lot tighter after 100 hours. I have both a 2001 and a 2003 DS650. The 2001 with 100 hours on it had zero clearance on the intake valves, and 0.006 on the exhaust. I adjusted it three sizes smaller shims for 0.006 clearance after I was done. (It had 235s in it, now it has 220s.) The 2003 Baja had a a similar problem, the exhaust were both at 0.006 and the intakes were at 0.004 (the bottom end of spec.) So I changed the shims in it from 240s to 235s and now they are both at 0.006 so I'll have the pleasure of adjusting them at the same time again.

I took my 2001 in to the dealer for the '10 hour service' and I don't think they bothered to check the valves, so yeah, you CAN go without doing it however I might suggest you consider doing it. If you haven't done it yourself, you will want someone around who has worked on this kind of setup. If you know anyone who has done a valve job on a Toyota they should have seen this before since I'm told almost all Toyotas use this type of valve instead of the rocker style.

Also, take a look at these links - you'll want to read EVERYTHING & examine the pictures closely before you do anything - the good news is that if you do you will have about 90% of the information you need on how to do the project. The other 10% I still suggest having someone who's worked on this type of valve setup with you.

This site is all about the BMW F650 - however it is the exact same engine, you'll see how exact when you open it up as well!
http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/Valve_Shim_Check_FAQ.htm

On this site, look on the left side, then click on the "Go To..." under quick navigation & take a look at Valve Check & Adjust. Also print out the valve shim chart - you'll want that when you go to the dealer to get shims.
http://www.glamisdunes.net/

Shims that fit the DS650 are:

DS650
BMW F650 (for whatever reason, the BMW dealer always has the lowest price by far!)
Kawasaki KZ1000 (Police Bike)
I dunno what else.

I got my shims from the Kawasaki dealer for $6/each. The BMW dealer wanted $4 but didn't have all of them in stock & I know of a guy who got his shims from the BMW dealer for $2 each.
