Finally decided to change the oil in the beast today. Let me say when starting on the project, i was a little worried after reading all those posts. But let me say with skepticism in hand, it was all in all a breeze. I pulled the drain plug first and when that stopped pouring i pulled that oil hose that runs on the left side of the motor (dipstick removed of course). Put those two back on and filled it back up with three quarts of bomb synthetic oil. Took exactly three quarts..hmm who would have thougth.. And then tackled the plugs. Began that task with worry as well. Some have said that that back plug was a trick and a half. Well I have one of those gear ratchet sets that also serves as deepwell..........NO PROBLEM AT ALL.
I'm glad I took the time to read all of you all's comments on how to do the ten hour service.

I do have one question though...while inspecting my drainplug, i noticed some metal shavings on the magnet. Is this usual for the break in oil?
Also, upon inspecting my plugs, one looked really black..carbon i assume, and the other looked like it might have been buring good..why could this be?

Thanks for all the help guys...this forum rocks...

Glad it went smooth for you. One thing odd though, mine takes just a tad bit shy of 4 quarts. Did you run her for a minute then recheck? Once oil gets circulated around a bit the tank level will drop some.
The metal shavings are normal, for any motor.
Not sure about the plug - maybe its wire wasn't quite plugged in?

after about three oil changes the shaving will become fewer. It from all the parts wearing into a fixed groove to work together, the rotax engine is put together well and the maganet do a good job of gathering up the lose particles form machining and wear. nothing to worry about.

It should take 3.3 quarts without changing the filter & just under 4 quarts with the filter. I asked the dealer about the shavings when I changed my oil the first time and they told me most of it is caused by the clutch wear.

well I cranked the motor without starting it cuz i thought that is what you all said to do...after doing that i changed the plugs and then checked the oil. It was reading a hair over full, but i figured after running it that it would go down...i'll recheck it later on too make sure.

I'm curious how many miles you had at 10 hours.

I had only 18 on my Traxter Max.

Thanks,

The Tax Max shows Hours, Miles and Trip... I like that.

I noticed the Initilal Inspection is to be at 10 miles or 150 miles....

We sure didn't come close to that.

But it was the first ride for my wife and I and we are old as dirt.
